Lawmakers in Maryland have passed SB 439, a bill that would protect firefighters, EMTs, and rescue workers from being penalized for legal, off-duty medical cannabis use.

Let’s break that down:

✔ They can’t be punished just for testing positive
✔ They must be registered medical patients
✔ Impairment on the job is STILL not allowed

So what’s really changing?

We’re finally acknowledging that first responders—
people who carry trauma, stress, and physical strain daily—
deserve options beyond opioids.

As a nurse, I’ve seen what happens when pain is unmanaged…
and I’ve also seen what happens when patients are given the right tools.

Cannabis isn’t about escaping.
It’s about supporting the body in a different way.

And policies like this?
They’re a step toward aligning healthcare with reality.
