In her time with the city, Merriweather sought to conduct a financial audit after alerting the council to a $2.5 to $2.9 million deficit. The audit was eventually dropped due to cost.

She also advanced the city’s decision to downsize its water plant and fired its top inspections official.

Merriweather also repeatedly brought up the city’s lack of department leadership, lack of employee training, cash flow shortage and outdated procedures.

The council previously offered Merriweather a contract for the long-term city manager position but spent months discussing it and never came to a final decision.

“It’s been unnecessarily stressful - dealing with people that purport that they want to move the city forward, but vote no on all your efforts,” Merriweather said. “I don’t know any of those people up there personally.

Pearlette Merriweather was escorted from city hall Monday night after a 4-3 council vote appointed Fire Chief Shawnderick Roberson to replace her immediately.
