💪Mental toughness isn’t about never feeling nervous, frustrated, tired, or doubtful.

⚽Mentally tough athletes still experience all of it.

🔑The difference is what they do next.

Accept the moment.
Focus on what you can control.
Choose the next useful action.

You don’t need to feel confident, calm, or motivated to perform well. You need the ability to respond effectively when things get difficult.

💪That’s mental toughness. And it can be trained.

😎Save this for the next time competition gets uncomfortable.

Mindfulness and Mental Fatigue

This 2026 study followed 79 elite handball players. Half completed six weeks of mindfulness training, while the others listened to neutral audio.

The mindfulness group improved its focus, reaction time, directional sprinting, and reactive agility. These athletes also made fewer errors, especially after completing a mentally tiring task.

TMB Takeaway: Mental fatigue can affect focus, decisions, and ex*****on. Regular mindfulness practice may help athletes stay present and perform more consistently when they are mentally tired.

The mental fatigue was created in a controlled testing environment, not during an actual game. More research is needed to see how these results carry over to competition.

Staiano W, et al. Overcoming Mental Fatigue Through Mindfulness: Improving Physical and Cognitive Performance in Elite Handball Players. J Sci Med Sport. 2026;29(1):91-99. doi: 10.1016/j.jsams.2025.08.004.

🔔 Mantra Monday 👊

🏆 A STRONG mantra from Ronnie Coleman!

🗣 "When it gets hard, thats when you GROW!."

🧐 Mantras are powerful tools for developing a strong mindset. They help athletes take control of their inner dialogue and shift focus away from doubt, fear, or outside noise. With consistent use, mantras can sharpen focus, steady nerves, and build confidence where it counts most: in the moment.

🔥 Whether it’s pre-game jitters or mid-competition pressure, repeating a mantra can create a mental anchor, keeping you locked into your values and goals. It’s a simple habit that builds mental muscle—reminding you of who you are and why you’re here.

Pre-race nerves are part of racing.

Your heart rate is up. Your stomach feels off. You are thinking about the course, the pace, the competition, and everything that could go wrong.

That is not the moment to fight the nerves. It is the moment to reset your attention.

1. NOTICE
What is showing up? Fast breathing? Tight legs? Doubt? Thinking too far ahead?

2. CONTROL
Come back to what you can control before the gun: your breathing, your warm-up, your posture, your race plan, and your first few minutes.

3. RESPOND
Pick one simple cue and use it.

“Relax.”

“Smooth.”

“Stay patient.”

“Run your race.”

You do not need to feel completely calm before you start.

You need a plan for where to put your attention when the nerves show up.

Comment TOUGH and I’ll send you The Mental Barbell’s free Mental Toughness Worksheet to help you build your own reset strategy.

Awareness Before Action.

Athletes are often quick to ask, “What should I do?”

Use a breathing exercise.
Change your self-talk.
Create a routine.
Use a cue word.
Visualize.

Those tools can help, but only if they address the right problem.

In mental performance training, the harder part is often understanding what is actually happening in the first place.

That is where awareness and metacognition matter.

A simple framework is:

• Awareness: What is happening?
• Acceptance: Can I acknowledge it without fighting it?
• Action: What response makes the most sense now?

The goal is to help athletes recognize their own patterns, including the early warning signs that show up before focus, confidence, or performance begins to drift.

Sometimes the intervention becomes much clearer once the athlete can see the problem more clearly.

The hammer is rarely the hard part.

Knowing where to tap is.
