Knee pain after service isn't just "getting older", it’s often a service-connected claim.

Knee conditions are among the most common claims processed by the VA. But they don't just look at X-rays—they rate based on functional loss and how pain impacts your daily life.

What the VA Evaluates:
Range of Motion - Painful movement, flexion, and extension limits.
Functional Loss - How stiffness or weakness hinders daily tasks.
Joint Instability - Giving out, locking up, or wobbling (can qualify for separate ratings!).
Medical Evidence - Treatment records, goniometer tests, and Nexus letters.

💡 Don't push through the pain. Document your symptoms and connect with an accredited VSO to get the rating you earned.

Many Vietnam-era Veterans may not realize that certain conditions linked to Agent Orange exposure are considered presumptive by the VA.

A presumptive condition means the VA may recognize a connection between your illness and military service if you meet specific requirements, without needing to prove the connection in the same way as a traditional claim.

A lot of service members assume they “don’t qualify” for VA benefits or job protections because they didn't deploy or serve 20 years.

Here’s the truth: The definition of a "Veteran" changes depending on the program. And you earned the right to check your options!

Here’s a quick breakdown:

The Core Baseline
Broadly, a Veteran is anyone who served on active duty and received an other-than-dishonorable discharge.

Different Programs = Different Rules
VA Healthcare & Education: Often look at time served (e.g., 24 continuous months for post-1980 enlistments) or activation orders for Guard/Reserve members.

Discharge Upgrades: Had a rough end to your service? Options exist to review and update your discharge status.

"Protected Veteran" Status (For Hiring)

Applying for jobs? Federal law gives special hiring preference to 4 groups of Protected Veterans:
- Disabled Veterans (Receiving disability or discharged for injury)
- Recently Separated (Discharged within the last 3 years)
- Service Medal Recipients (Earned an Armed Forces Service Medal)
- Campaign Badge Veterans (Served in an authorized war or campaign)

The Takeaway: Don't self-select out. Work with a free, accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO) to claim what you earned!
