This will be one of my final posts here. I am so disheartened by our school board's lack of consideration for the students of our district. Time and time again we, as a community, have requested that we put our children before all else, but to no avail. Their raise is back on the table, and during summertime no less. It makes one wonder if they really cared what the citizens of our city thought why sneak it in when most people are out of town?

Today is the day! If you haven't already done so, make sure to vote. The polls are open right now.

What a crazy busy few days! Volunteering at the Haunted Trail on Tuesday, meeting with teachers, constituents lunch, then afternoon/evening delivering campaign information on Wednesday, Hillcrest PTSA meeting, HJH Orchestra concert, and HJH Band concert on Thursday, Eggs and Issues, volunteering at Liberty, doctor visit for a bacterial rash for 1 kiddo (including plenty of prescriptions) on Friday, then ANOTHER doctor visit on Saturday for a different kiddo (Strep, yuck!). It's exhausting, but I always feel like I'm making a difference when my week is busy because of volunteering. (The Strep I could live without. ;) ) (Oh did I mention a crushing loss for the Spartans? At least we made the play offs, right?)

The Haunted Trail was great last night! I love having the opportunity to serve in our community, and I love it when my children can help as well. I appreciate the Chamber of Commerce asking the candidates to help support such a great cause; the prevention of child abuse. It was great seeing everyone who came out. Sorry I couldn't talk more, but you know that when a job needs to get done I'm usually the one to do it. ;) Sheri Van Bibber did an excellent job putting the Trail together this year. We had a great time putting on our costumes and supporting our Chamber. (Sorry about the bad pics. Bad angle, bad lighting. :) )

Just a quick reminder: if you haven't registered to vote today is your last chance before the election on November 4.

Do you have plans on Halloween morning? If you'd like to chat about some of the issues facing our district with me I will be at an "Eggs and Issues" breakfast hosted by the Murray Chamber of Commerce. It will be held at Mimi's Cafe on 5300 South State Street at 7:30 am. The first "Eggs and Issues" was Friday between Richard Clark and Kami Anderson. (We had a short vacation planned with our children so I wasn't able to attend. You have to take advantage of time off school, and childhood. :) ) Next Friday, Oct. 24, will be between my good friends Mike Adams and Belinda Johnson, then Halloween will be between Cris Longhurst and myself. I'd love to see everyone come out either to ask questions, or just support me. ;) See you then! PS-Remember to wear your Halloween costumes; I will be. :)

Good Saturday morning! I just wanted to remind everyone that election day is rapidly approaching (November 4), and if you haven't voted my mail already I hope you'll take a chance to vote in person.

I was asked by the Women's Voter League of Utah about early interventions, and what I thought of them; specifically all- day Kindergarten. For me that was a no-brainer. I have personally witnessed the improvement struggling learners have had in an all-day setting. Where they might have come into school barely talking, they enter first grade reading. It truly is amazing.

It doesn't end at elementary school either. Our secondary schools have some great interventions masked as rewards. At Hillcrest Jr. High students are given an Plus-Period nearly every day. This extended learning period allows those students who are current in their homework, have an acceptable grade to have a free 20 minute period to do a myriad of activities, or participate in clubs. Those who don't meet the requirements are sent to the class they're low in and given a chance, almost 1-on-1, to improve. Almost every child will receive the intervention at one time or another, which takes away the stigma of needing help. MHS also provides a similar experience for the students through ELP. I have had the chance to be in on the planning and implementation of both of these programs. Of course there is always tweaking to do, but I'm really pleased with both of these programs.

Can I just say, I LOVE this school?!? We're at the football game showing support for cancer research.

I had a great time last night as I volunteered with the Murray High PTSA. I was able to help the school pass out mid-term reports to those that attended Parent-Teacher conferences. I had several great conversations about the state of our school district, and what I'd like to accomplish if elected.

The first thing I would like to do as a Murray School Board member is to eliminate health benefits for the board. There is no ethical reason the school board should have health benefits, especially when many of our district employees are having their work hours cut because of the healthcare issues. So, if elected, that will be the first thing I change.

If you ever have any questions, or concerns, that you'd like me to address please let me know.

I had a great time last night volunteering at the Liberty Elementary carnival. It was a long evening, and a ton of work, but it's totally worth it for the kids to be able to have field trips, library books, classroom ipads, art classes, etc. Congratulations Liberty PTA on a job we'll done!
