This is a sign we taped to the wall beside our dining table at home three years ago, and we’ve never taken it down. Even the 3 1/2 year old knows what it says, and he doesn’t read yet. The message was created at a family meeting precipitated by a rude kindergartner and his overly reactive parents. Before we gather for our Thanksgiving feasts tomorrow, take a minute to remind yourself and your family that politeness at its best shows our consideration for others and our recognition that our behavior impacts them. In Hebrew, this concept is called “Derekh Eretz,” the way of the land; in Yiddish, it’s being a Mensch, an authentic human being. No matter how chaotic the kids get, regardless of whining, and despite argumentative relatives, remind yourself that there should be no growling at the table.

As a follow-up to last week's blog post on hacking Thanksgiving to save your sanity, I just posted a video on using Google Sheets to plan your meal. It's not glamorous looking, but I think the video can help you visualize what such a spreadsheet might look like.
Last week, on the Envision Yourself Blog, I offered my first post on life hacks for the holidays. Today’s video shows you a tiny glimpse of my Thanksgiving dinner spreadsheet. When you do planning tasks on Google Drive, it makes it much easier to include people in preparations, including signing up to bring special foods, sharing allergies, requesting dishes, and signing up to clear and clean. Check back on Friday for our next post: Envisioning the Perfect Gift.

Self-care doesn’t require consumer indulgences—it starts with designing a life that you don’t need to escape from. (And can someone tell me how to get rid of this stupid photo?)
This Is What ‘Self-Care’ REALLY Means, Because It’s Not All Salt Baths And Chocolate Cake Did you use the right filter for that ‘gram of your impeccably prepared acai bowl?

These aren’t just Hot Wheels cars - they’re incentives. Unfortunately, like most external incentives, they aren’t very successful. Half of them are vehicles picked by my toddler as rewards for sitting on the potty. The problem is... you can get a child to sit on the toilet, but unless they find it easier, more comfortable, or somehow meaningful (“being a big kid”, for example), the child won’t go on their own. That’s the difference between internal and external incentives. We try to use external incentives all the time with ourselves, using promises of power, security, success, or social approval to motivate ourselves toward what we think we _should_ do. Success starts when we find internal incentives, motivations that resonate with our deepest values and core identity. https://instagram.com/p/BbbK86OhD_-/
