Stop guessing why your Google Ads aren’t converting.

Most business owners think they need a “secret hack” to fix their performance. In reality, you just need a repeatable framework to audit your account. I use the STAB method to ensure every dollar spent is working as hard as possible.

Here are the four levers you need to pull to optimize your account:
    •    Spending & Segmentation: Identify exactly where you are getting results and double down. If a segment is wasting money, cut it immediately.
    •    Targeting: Be ruthless with your keywords and audiences. Add negative keywords and refine your locations to ensure you only show up for high-intent users.
    •    Ads & Landing Pages: Your ads are only as good as your website. You need a winning offer and a landing page that actually converts traffic into customers.
    •    Bidding: Make sure your bidding strategy—whether it’s Target CPA or ROAS—is actually aligned with your profit margins.

You need three things for a campaign to work.

#1 A solid account structure.
#2 An offer that sells.
#3 And a landing page that converts.

Most people focus only on the first one and ignore the other two.

Here is what a high converting landing page actually needs (from over 10k user tests of data):

1. Headline that speaks to the user’s problem, not your product
2. One clear next step, not five options
3. A Clean layout that is easy to read on mobile
4. Social proof that removes doubt before the decision
5. A checkout or form process that does not create friction

If even one of these is missing, your campaign spend is working against you.

When it comes to AI MAX right now… I am not using it. 

Not because I think it will never work, but because right now the evidence is not there to justify recommending it broadly.

These are my 3 specific reasons.

 #1 the incremental reach claim does not hold up in the data we are seeing. In one account we audited, AI Max was running for five weeks alongside Broad Match and Exact Match keywords. When we mapped the search terms AI Max was generating against the previous five weeks of data, 83% of those terms were already being triggered without AI Max. It accounted for 92% of clicks and 100% of conversions. The existing campaign structure was already doing the work.

#2 the ad copy generation still makes basic errors. Wrong dates, outdated references, inaccurate headlines. I know you can build out guidelines but right now I am waiting for extra updates for this features.

#3 Google has not released the data thresholds needed to make AI Max perform reliably. With Performance Max we had clear benchmarks. 30 conversions in 30 days to launch. 50 conversions for tCPA or tROAS. We do not have equivalent benchmarks for AI Max yet. I do not doubt Google’s 7% conversion lift but I would first like to get confirmation on the frameworks and best use cases around traffic & spend. 

For the record, I do believe AI Max will get there. The trajectory of Performance Max from 2022 to now gives me confidence in that. But right now the proven scaling path still outperforms it for the vast majority of accounts.

Right Now I am not recommending AI Max for the vast majority of businesses.

Not because it is a bad product. The concept is something I believe in and the potential is real.

But for me my confidence in AI Max is not there yet. And this mainly because I am yet to see clear data for it’s best use cases.

The main point for me right now is that most businesses are nowhere near the point where they actually need it.

Right now internally at DDA (this will change in the future) our view is that if you need AI Max, it means you have completely capped out everything else. You have exhausted Broad Match in Search, Performance Max and Demand Gen. Plus you are spending a lot of money and hitting the ceiling of what the standard campaign stack can do.

That is not 95% of businesses.

While I am very positive towards AI Max as concept, right now my message is: Master the fundamentals first.
