I want to thank all of you for your warm welcoming words. I had the opportunity to meet some of you at the open house and everyone was very warm and friendly. The kids were just as nice and friendly as they could be. Thank you all for a very warm welcome. Now let's have a FANTASTIC YEAR!!!!

Hello and Welcome Back!

I hope that you and your family had a relaxing summer vacation. My name is Gwen Stevens, and I am thrilled to be the new counselor at Mount Vernon Intermediate School! I am privileged to be working alongside the nicest and friendliest staff that I have ever had the opportunity to work with. With that said, I am sure this is going to be a fun year filled with learning and growing and lots of new adventures. I cannot wait to get to know you, and most importantly your child!

First I want to take a few moments to tell you a little about me. I was born and raised in Springfield. Was in the Navy for 12 years and then opened up a daycare with my sister. We did that for 15 years. I attended Evangel University where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree and just recently graduated from Lindenwood University with my Master’s Degree in School Counseling. As for my fabulous family of seven; I am married to my wonderful husband David and together we have two fantastic eighteen-year-old boys (I guess I should say men) Jonah and Jonathon. However, they will always be “my boys.” We also have two cats Chewy and Gary-Q and two dogs, Jacob and Romeo.

This will be my first year as a School Counselor, and I consider myself to be so lucky to have the opportunity to pursue my passion. I am so excited to get the year started. My hope is that this school year will be filled with lots of fun and successful experiences for both my students and myself. My Schedule:

7:45-8:15 Greet kiddos in cafeteria as they eat breakfast.

8:35-9:05 3rd Grade classroom counseling lessons.

9:25-9-:55 4th Grade classroom counseling lessons.

10:15-10:45 5th Grade classroom counseling lessons

11:00-12:45 Lunch Buddies (The kiddos that need to talk to me have lunch with me in my room.)

12:45-2:45 Do testing and/or small groups.

This is a small sample of some of the groups that I will be running:

Banana Splits- For kiddos with divorced parents or split families.

Setting Sail on the Friend Ship- How to make friends and keep friends.

Red light to Green light- taming the temper.

Test your Best- Preparations and strategies for the test’s.

In our society, we don't like to say goodbye. I'm no exception. I have had a wonderful 3 years as school counselor at MVIS. I truly believe Mt. Vernon has the best students, school faculty/staff, parents, and community members, and I have been very blessed to have been able to live and work here.

In August, I will begin a new life chapter as the school counselor at Truman Elementary in Nevada, MO. I am excited to work much closer to where my husband and I live in Rich Hill. However when at my new school, I will have to fight hard to not always say, "In Mt. Vernon, we...".

Next school year, the counselor at MVIS will be Mrs. Gwen Stevens. I'll let her introduce herself, but I know she is excited to begin.

Summer Reading Program --->>> The Mt. Vernon Branch Library has announced their summer reading program. The schedule is below. The reading program includes games and prizes that go along with the reading. (Last year prizes included Kindle Fires and other devices!)

Well done, 5th grade. Hard work and 99% attendance during the MAP tests! MVIS has competed the 2016 state assessments - all our students gave their best and had great attitudes throughout!
