When Eric Richards started driving a tractor trailer in 2005, he focused on what many drivers do: getting the job done safely and staying on schedule. He also made an effort to watch his weight, but like so many professional drivers, long hours behind the wheel meant exercise took a back seat.

For years, Eric would sometimes drive up to seven hours without getting out of the truck. It seemed harmless at the time, until his body told a different story.

Earlier this year, Eric suffered a bulging disc that took him off the road for two months.

Instead of accepting pain as part of the job, Eric chose to learn from the experience. Today, he visits a chiropractor every two weeks, follows a routine of stretches and simple exercises, and has made movement a priority. His chiropractor reminded Eric that he isn't alone. Many long-time drivers experience the same issues from years of constant vibration, rough roads, and sitting for hours without taking breaks.

That experience changed how Eric approaches every mile.

Now he gets out of the truck every two to three hours, even if it's only for five or ten minutes. A quick walk around the parking lot, a trip to the restroom, a few stretches, squats, or simply touching his toes helps break up the hours of sitting. He also uses a neoprene seat cushion to reduce the constant jarring from the road and adjusted his seating position so his knees stay below his waist, improving comfort on long drives.

For Eric, safety isn't only about what happens outside the truck. It's also about taking care of the person behind the wheel.

His company provides a refrigerator, allowing him to pack healthy meals instead of relying on fast food. Grilled chicken, turkey, vegetables, baked potatoes, oatmeal, fresh carrots, celery, and plenty of water have become staples of his routine. He drinks about half a gallon of water each day, limits himself to two cups of coffee, and rarely drinks soda.

When he's home, Eric stays active with planks, pull-ups, squats, lunges, walking, and mountain biking with his kids because staying healthy off the road helps him stay safe on it.

Eric hopes other drivers learn from his experience before pain forces them to.

"Get out of your truck every two to three hours. Walk for five to ten minutes. Stretch. Do a few squats. Anything to break up sitting in the same position for hours. Your body will thank you."

Every safe mile begins with taking care of yourself!

Thank you, Eric, for sharing your story and reminding us that the healthiest habits are often the ones that keep us safely rolling down the road.

Small moments can have a bigger impact than we realize. As Dr. Gina Anderson reminds us, “Because it’s these moments of purpose that can change our brains.” 💙

When we create opportunities for meaningful connection, curiosity, and purpose, we’re doing more than making a moment matter, we’re helping shape the way we learn, grow, and engage with the world around us. ✨

As we prepare for Driver Appreciation Week, we have a question for you.

If you had a billboard on the side of the highway dedicated to professional drivers, what would it say?

A simple thank you?
A message of encouragement?
A reminder of the impact they make every day?

Drop your billboard message in the comments. Let's fill this thread with appreciation for the men and women who keep America moving. 🚛❤️

What happens when an entrepreneur sees a problem affecting thousands of professional drivers and decides to create a better solution?

On this episode of The Courage to Create, I sat down with Evan Shelley, Co-Founder and CEO of Truck Parking Club, to talk about the journey of building a business that is helping address one of the trucking industry’s biggest challenges: finding safe, reliable truck parking.

Evan shares how an idea turned into a growing nationwide platform, why perseverance is one of the most important qualities an entrepreneur can have, and what he has learned about taking risks, solving real problems, and building something with purpose.

As the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national enforcement campaign continues through September 7, it's a timely reminder that every decision behind the wheel matters.

Impaired driving doesn't only involve alcohol. Prescription medications, illegal drugs, cannabis, and even some over-the-counter medications can affect reaction time, judgment, and focus.

Before you drive:
✅ Plan a safe ride home if you'll be drinking.
✅ Understand how your medications may affect your ability to drive.
✅ Never get behind the wheel if you're impaired.
✅ Speak up if someone you know is about to drive impaired.

For professional drivers, the responsibility is even greater. Every trip is an opportunity to protect yourself, your passengers, and everyone else sharing the road.

At Luma Brighter Learning, we believe education empowers better decisions. Building a culture of safety starts with the choices we make—every trip, every day.

Drive sober. Drive alert. Arrive safely.

In this episode of Season 4 of the I Love Learning Podcast, I sat down with M***a Trucker News creator Alex Mai, to talk about what it really takes to put an idea and yourself out into the world.

Alex began by sharing his experiences as a truck driver with something most of us already have: a cell phone. What started as telling stories from the road eventually grew into a platform reaching more than a million people and giving a voice to the trucking community.

But the journey wasn't without rejection, ideas that didn't work, and the very real fear of failing where everyone could see it. Alex's story is a great reminder that the courage to create isn't about having the perfect plan or knowing you'll succeed. It's about being willing to start, learn, listen, and keep showing up.

Sometimes the idea that doesn't work teaches us how to find the one that does.

Why Meditation Matters on the Road
Truck driving is one of the most mentally demanding jobs in the world. Long hours, traffic, weather, deadlines, and time away from family can create stress and fatigue.
Meditation is not about “emptying your mind” or sitting cross-legged for an hour. It’s simply a way to reset your brain, lower stress, and improve focus.

Just 2–5 minutes of meditation daily can help drivers:
Reduce stress and frustration
Improve concentration
Stay calmer in traffic
Sleep better during rest periods
Reduce mental fatigue
Improve overall wellness

Why Psychological Safety Matters

Our CEO, Dr. Gina Anderson, reminds us that we never know what someone is going through. Even when we’re having a hard conversation, it should always stem from love and kindness because when we can give both, we can create environments where all employees can thrive.

Four years. 💛

Luma Brighter Learning has made the Inc. 5000 list for the fourth year in a row, and we’re incredibly proud.

Growth like this doesn’t happen because of one person or one big moment. It happens because of a team that cares deeply about the work, customers who trust us, and a shared belief that what we’re building can make a real difference.

Through all the growth and change, we’ve stayed grounded in the same values that got us here: customer commitment, integrity, quality, passion, and teamwork.

To our team, our customers, our partners, and everyone who has cheered us on along the way—thank you. You’re part of this milestone, too.

We’re still growing, still learning, and still changing lives. Together, we are doing something wonderful.

Thank you, Inc. 5000, for recognizing Luma as one of the fastest-growing private companies in America for the fourth year in a row!
