As you are aware, for several years we have been working diligently to secure a building for Dogwood Classical Academy. The Charter School Review Board met on Monday, March 11, 2024 and approved our request to delay the school opening until 2025 as we persist in our search.

It is important for our school leadership to create a school that preserves parents’ freedom and responsibility to educate their children well. We have experienced unexpected obstacles to opening Dogwood Classical Academy within the initial time frame. We can understand that many of you share in our disappointment. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused you and your family in the school planning process. We want to assure you that we are still committed to offering an excellent classical education option to your family, and we look forward to partnering with you more fully in the coming days! Thank you for your persevering support.

Our Board of Directors met this past weekend for our annual retreat. We continue to pursue property leads in Cabarrus County. Our goal continues to be opening a K-12 tuition-free charter school where students learn through traditional American classical education with an emphasis on civic virtue. Thank you for your ongoing support.

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. 🇺🇸

𝘋𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸? On April 12, 1776, North Carolina became the first of the colonies to officially call for independence from Great Britain. The resolution became known as the "Halifax Resolves" and that is why April 12, 1776 is included on the NC flag. ❤️🤍💙

The curriculum used in Hillsdale-affiliated schools is content rich, balanced, and strong across the four disciplines of math, science, literature, and history. Each of these are essential to a liberal arts based-curriculum, which at its core focuses on studying humanity and the world around us from a variety of perspectives. In the Hillsdale curriculum, students study at minimum physics, biology, and chemistry in their upper school science classes. Chemistry in particular explores the smallest, most fundamental level of ourselves and the physical world around us. To dive deeper into the question of why we study chemistry, we highly recommend the new free Hillsdale College online course, “The Great Principles of Chemistry.” https://online.hillsdale.edu/landing/chemistry

Did you know? Cabarrus County boasts the first documented gold find in the US at Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site!

HCA is beginning several new featured posts on specific days each week, including "Spotlight Saturday"! In today's Spotlight, we're focusing on a local favorite, Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site. For those newer to the area, you may not realize that Cabarrus County's own Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States.

The gold was discovered by John Reed (Johannes Reith), a Hessian soldier who left the British army and settled in this area near the conclusion of the Revolutionary War.

According to their own website, "The life of farmer John Reed would have been long forgotten had it not been for a chance event one Sunday in 1799. On that day, Reed's son Conrad found a large yellow rock in Little Meadow Creek on the Reed farm in Cabarrus County. This rock reportedly weighed 17 pounds and for three years was used as a doorstop at the Reed house.

In 1802 a Fayetteville jeweler identified the gold nugget. He purchased it for the asked price of $3.50—one-tenth of one percent of its true value."

Reed Gold Mine is a great place to visit, especially on a tight budget. Admission to the park is free, but guided underground tours and gold panning are optional fun paid activities.

Reed Gold Mine is located at:
9621 Reed Mine Rd
Midland, N.C. 28107

Hours:
Tuesday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Closed Sunday, Monday, and most major holidays
Admission is free, Fee for underground guided tours
