Katelyn Shadley, sophomore in chemical engineering, shares her story about her experience this summer! "I’m a chemical engineer major and I spent this summer as a chemical engineer intern at Walsh Engineering. The main projects that I have worked on is Beartooth, which is a process for recycling used nuclear fuel and MARVEL which is a micro nuclear reactor. Throughout this internship, I have learned so a lot from more involved programming to get a automated system in Mathcad to calculate all the incoming and outgoing concentrations for each stage within the Beartooth process as well as calculating pressures of the gases within the MARVEL reactor. I also learned how to give professional presentations of my work to the INL project leads. It was an incredible opportunity that I was able to take part in." Sounds like a great opportunity and can't wait to see your success in the next few years!

Nicole may have graduated in May, but we are still so proud of all her accomplishments, including the Galapagos Conservancy sharing her work!
Although Hermit Crabs might not be as popular as Galápagos' other shelled residents, we're certainly not going to tell this little one that it isn't the star of the show!

Lydia Beardsley, Mechanical Engineering major, is working for Fiberguide in Caldwell, ID as an Advanced Manufacturing Intern. She shares her experience with us this summer: "I am responsible for supporting the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team by completing fiber optics assemblies, optimizing process parameters, and solving processing issues with the manufacturing and engineering team as they arise, among other things.
I switched internships mid-summer, and it taught me to not be afraid of giving notice! At first, I was prepared to sacrifice career experience applicable to my major and personal fulfillment at work because I had committed to another internship before I found the position as the Adv. Mfg. Intern at Fiberguide. Ultimately, I chose the position at Fiberguide and gave notice at my previous internship. It put me far outside of my comfort zone to do so, but it taught me a valuable lesson-put yourself first!" Congrats Lydia!! What an amazing opportunity right after your freshman year! Can't wait to see what your future looks like 💜

Sara Murphy, majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Political Science shares her experience this summer! "This summer I was chosen to be a public policy intern with the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) program. Normally this program is held in Washington DC and interns have the opportunity to network with representatives and bureaucrats on Capitol Hill. However, this year the internship was held remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions. To be a part of the WISE program, I was sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers or AIChE. For most of the summer, I have been researching and writing a public policy paper titled Modernizing the U.S. Electric Grid: A Proposal to Update Transmission Infrastructure for the Future of Electricity. This paper is the main assignment of my internship, and it will be published in the Journal of Engineering & Public Policy at the end of my internship. I was also required to present the findings of my paper to my fellow interns, professional societies, and government officials. I will also be presenting my findings from my WISE internship at AICHE's national conference in November and am working on publishing in AIChE's Environmental Progress & Sustainable Energy journal. As part of the WISE program, I have also had the chance to network with members of the Library of Congress (LOC), the State Department, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Overall, the WISE program was an incredible opportunity and I look forward to maintaining relationships with my fellow interns and engineers in government." So excited for you and can't wait to see what the future holds for you!
