🩺 The Vet’s Scoop 🐴✨

📣 This week’s highlight: Balancing Minerals

“Many horses consume more iron than they need. Forages in some regions naturally contain high levels of iron, while copper and zinc are more commonly deficient. Balancing mineral ratios can be just as important as meeting total requirements.”
— Dr. Fran Rowe, DVM, Veterinary Nutritionist

When evaluating your horse's diet, it's important to look beyond individual nutrient levels. While iron is abundant in many hays and water sources, copper and zinc deficiencies are much more common. These minerals compete with iron for absorption, so maintaining the proper balance can help support healthy hooves, skin, coat quality, immune function, and metabolic health. A forage analysis is one of the best ways to identify mineral imbalances and build a well-balanced feeding program.

💬 Wondering if your horse's diet has the right mineral balance? Our equine nutritionists offer complimentary diet evaluations to identify nutritional gaps and provide personalized recommendations.

💡 Tip of the Day

🌾 Most horses get enough protein from forage. Good-quality hay and pasture typically provide adequate protein for mature horses at maintenance or in light work.

🧬 Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Lysine, methionine, and threonine are often the first limiting amino acids in equine diets and play key roles in muscle, hoof, and coat health.

💪 More protein isn't always better. Feeding excess protein won't necessarily improve topline or muscle development. Meeting amino acid requirements and balancing the overall diet is often more important.

Is your horse getting enough Vitamin E? 🤔
Here’s what you should know.

Vitamin E is an essential antioxidant that protects cells from damage and supports muscle, nerve, and immune health. Horses cannot produce Vitamin E on their own, they must get it from the diet. Fresh green forage is the best source, but levels drop quickly in hay and stored forages, leaving many horses at risk. Horses in heavy work, under stress, pregnant mares, or those with certain health conditions may require even higher levels to stay healthy.

When Vitamin E is lacking, oxidative stress builds in the body. Over time, this can damage muscle and nerve tissue, sometimes subtly at first, before progressing to more serious problems.

Common signs of deficiency include:
• Muscle weakness or poor topline development
• Stiffness or reluctance to move forward
• Sore or tight muscles despite conditioning
• Neurological changes such as incoordination
• Poor immune function or slow recovery
• General lethargy or dull attitude

Diagnosis is done through blood tests with your veterinarian. Both synthetic and natural forms of Vitamin E can be used to supplement but notably Natural Vitamin E is up to 2.5 times more bioavailable than synthetic forms and is stored more efficiently by horses.

That’s where our new Mg+Natural E 4,000™ come in:
✔ Natural, highly bioavailable Vitamin E
✔ Supports muscle, nerve, and immune health
✔ Promotes strength, recovery, and performance
✔ Includes Magnesium, Vitamin C and more

Give your horse the Vitamin E support they need to stay strong, resilient, and performing at their best.

Tight muscles in your horse? Here's what you should know. 👇

Muscle tension isn’t always as simple as a horse being stiff, and it can be frustrating as an owner when you’re doing your best and they still don’t feel quite right. You just want them comfortable, willing, and performing the way you know they can.

You may notice shortened strides, difficulty bending or picking up leads, resistance under saddle, sensitivity during grooming or saddling, or trouble building and maintaining topline. While factors like training intensity, conditioning, saddle fit, and turnout all play a role in muscle comfort, recurring tightness may sometimes point to an underlying muscle health concern.

If your horse consistently struggles with muscle tension, work closely with your veterinarian to rule out conditions such as exertional rhabdomyolysis (tying up), PSSM, or other metabolic and muscle related issues.

Nutrition can also play an important role in supporting healthy muscle function. Magnesium helps support normal muscle contraction, relaxation, and nerve function. Natural Vitamin E provides antioxidant support to help protect muscle cells from oxidative stress, while selenium works alongside Vitamin E to support healthy muscle function. Quality amino acids provide the building blocks needed to support muscle development, repair, and recovery.

Every horse is different, and the right nutritional approach depends on factors like workload, forage quality, environment, and individual needs. When it comes to muscle health concerns, start with the basics: a veterinary evaluation, quality forage, proper conditioning, and targeted nutritional support.

MVP offers a variety of supplements to support your horse’s muscle health from targeted options like Magnesium 5,000™ or Natural E 5,000™ to comprehensive formulas like Mg + Natural E 4,000™, In-Sync™, Amino 15X™, and more.
