📖 Parent-teacher conferences are short, but how you show up says a lot.

🍎 As a teacher, I loved when parents came in with a plan or took notes. Now as a parent, I want my kids’ teachers to know I’m on their team.

I’ve sat on both sides of the middle school tour. 🏫

As a teacher, I watched kids trail behind their parents, while the grown ups asked about test scores and bus routes. As a mom, I caught myself doing the exact same thing.🙋‍♀️

But here’s what I know from years in classrooms: kids who feel like they had a say in where they go show up differently. They walk in on day one with a little more confidence, a little more ownership, and a lot more “this is MY school.” 💙

That doesn’t start on enrollment day. It starts on the tour, when they’re asking their own questions and noticing what matters to them.

The first time I handed my girls their own questionnaire, I watched them go from “do we have to go?” to pointing out things I walked right past. 👀

That’s why I made this one free. Every middle schooler deserves to walk into that building like it might be theirs.

The clues to your kid’s best school might already be on your living-room floor. 🎨🔬🧩

Right now I’m touring schools with my own kids. One wants to see the art studio. The other wants to know if there’s a real science lab. Totally different priorities.
But on every tour, they both noticed the same thing: Does this place feel warm? Will I be known here?

That told me more than any ranking ever could.

Before you compare schools, get curious about your kid:
 ✨ What drives them?
 ✨ What can they spend hours doing?
 ✨ Do they thrive on routine or novelty?

Then ask: Does the way this school works fit the way my kid works?

Before you compare schools, get clear on what you’re comparing them against. 🧭

Rigor, creativity, independence, structure: every family weighs these differently, and that’s exactly why one family’s dream school can be another’s worst fit. Your values are the filter. Without them, every tour just blurs together.

🏫 Every school looks great on tour day. The halls are clean, the principal is warm, and the kids are on their best behavior.

Teacher retention tells you what that school is like on a regular Tuesday in February.

As a former teacher, I can tell you this: we can tell within a few months whether a building is a place to stay or a place to survive. And we vote with our feet.
When the same school has to rehire year after year, kids lose more than a familiar face. They lose the systems, the relationships, and the know-how that walked out with that teacher.

The good news? You don’t need insider access to find out. You just need to ask.

In Episode 5 of my School Search Series I asked: Who is going to know my child when I’m not in the building? 💙

I didn’t think to ask that until my own kiddo was having a hard time and her teacher stepped up in a way I’ll never forget.

There’s research behind this. It’s called school connectedness — kids believing the adults at school care about them as people, not just as students. CDC data ties it to stronger academic and mental health outcomes, some of it lasting into adulthood.

So don’t stop at “does the school have a counselor?” Ask:
🙁 If my child is having a hard time, who notices?
🧑‍🏫 Who can they go to besides their classroom teacher?
🏫 How does the school respond when something changes academically, socially or emotionally?

No school is supposed to do my job. But the right one has people in it who would catch my kid before I even knew she was falling.

Nobody puts “we knocked on doors so we wouldn’t close” on a school tour. 🚪

But enrollment and finances quietly decide whether the reading interventionist is still there in two years, whether the signature program survives, and whether your kiddo’s class gets folded into another one.

Fair questions to ask on a tour:
📊 How has enrollment changed the last three years?
👩‍🏫 How many teachers came back this fall?
🗂️ Where can I find your budget? (Public and charter ones are public record.)
💡 You’re known for ___ . What tells you it’s working?
