📓Something I didn’t say in the video: you’re being asked to evaluate a kid who doesn’t exist yet.
The five year old in front of you in February is not the five year old who walks in next August. Six months at this age is enormous. That’s why the “is he ready” question feels so impossible. You’re making a call about a moving target, usually at the exact moment your kid is between two versions of himself.
So if you’re spiraling right now, it’s not because you’re missing something obvious. It’s because the question genuinely can’t be answered by watching harder.
That’s what an evaluation is for, figuring out where your kiddo actually is, and what setting will meet them there.
Everyone needs an ally.

🍎 Every teacher walks into August with a blank slate. Your kid doesn’t.
Here’s what most parents don’t think about: teachers spend this month building seating charts, line spots, partner groups — all the invisible structure that makes a classroom run. And they’re doing it with zero context on your kiddo.
You have that context. That’s the whole advantage.
This isn’t about handing over a file of everything that went wrong last year — it’s about giving the teacher a head start on what actually works, so they’re not guessing their way through September.
One thing I always tell parents: read your message back before you hit send. Does it sound like you’re building a team, or handing over a warning label? Tone carries as much weight as the content itself.

First day back jitters? 😰➡️😊
My daughter had some real anxiety this week about heading back to school — and instead of just saying “you’ll be fine,” we sat down and did this:
📝 Column 1: Name the fear 📝 Column 2: Name the negative self-talk attached to it 📝 Column 3: Write a positive mantra to replace it
The magic isn’t in ignoring the fear — it’s giving her something concrete to SAY to herself when the anxious thoughts show up.
This works for social fears, academic fears, separation anxiety — any of it.

Your teen has handled new buildings and new routines before — what’s actually new is what they need from you now: less rescuing, more room to figure it out. Here’s how to shift your role for high school:

1️⃣ Trade fixing for listening: When they vent, they usually want to be heard, not solved.
2️⃣ Let the fallout happen: A forgotten assignment or scheduling mix-up builds real confidence.
3️⃣ Watch your own instinct to step in: Too much rescuing can land as doubt, not support.

Your middle schooler has done this before; new teacher, new building, new routine, they’ve survived it. 🎒

So why does this transition feel so much bigger? Because middle school flips their whole social status overnight — from oldest and most confident to youngest and most anonymous. Here’s how to actually support them through it:

1️⃣ Be their translator, not their manager! Help them decode the new system instead of running it for them.
2️⃣ Watch the quiet, compliant kid as closely as the moody one! Anxiety at this age often hides behind “I’m fine.”
3️⃣ Trade “how was your day?” for something specific, like “who’d you sit with at lunch,” asked side by side in the car.

Forget flashcards. 🅰️ The kids who thrive in kindergarten aren’t the ones who already know their ABCs — they’re the ones who can handle a hard moment without falling apart. Here’s how to actually prep your kiddo (and yourself!) these next few weeks:
1️⃣ Practice frustration at home. Let them lose the game or sit with a “no” while you stay calm next to them. That’s the exact muscle kindergarten asks them to use.
2️⃣ Rehearse the goodbye: a short, predictable phrase and a quick exit so drop off feels familiar, not scary, on day one.
3️⃣ Check YOUR nerves before you check theirs. Be a regulator. Kiddos feel our anxiety before they can name their own, so work through yours separately so it’s not what they’re absorbing at drop off.

Tour season is officially here! 🎒✨
Here’s the thing families don’t always realize: most private/independent school applications open around September 1st… but tours? Those are already filling up. Some schools are even accepting applications early!
Please, please don’t apply to a school before you’ve walked the halls yourself. What you see (and feel) on a tour tells you so much more than any brochure ever will. Check each school’s website for their tour dates spots are going fast, so get on the list now, not in September.

I see parents make this mistake so often on school tours. 👀

Most families leave saying, “It just felt like a good fit.” And that feeling matters — but it’s not the whole picture.

A school tour isn’t just about how a school *feels*. It’s about gathering the right information so you know your child can actually thrive there.

One question I always encourage parents to ask: “What happens when a student struggles?”

That answer will tell you far more than the new building or the colorful classrooms ever will.
