📚 Worried About Your Child’s Reading? These Could Be Early Signs of Dyslexia 👀

Dyslexia can be hard to spot in young children—but early intervention makes a huge difference. Here are 5–7 early signs to watch for:

🔤 Struggles to recognize or name letters
🗣️ Has trouble rhyming words (like cat, hat, bat)
✏️ Difficulty remembering letter sounds
🧠 Mixes up the order of sounds in words (“pasghetti” instead of “spaghetti”)
📖 Avoids reading or gets easily frustrated by it
🖐️ Trouble with sequences (like days of the week or counting)
🧩 May have strong thinking skills but weak reading and writing skills

💡If these sound familiar, don’t panic—you’re not alone, and support is out there!

🌞📚 Summer Tips for Parents of Kids with Dyslexia
Keep the momentum going—even when school’s out! 💪

Here are a few FUN and SIMPLE ways to keep your child’s reading and learning skills strong over the summer:

🔤 1. Play Word Games Daily
Try Bananagrams, Scrabble Jr., or apps like Wordscapes or Phonics Hero. They build phonics and vocabulary without feeling like work!

📚 2. Read Together, Every Day
Choose dyslexia-friendly books with larger fonts, wider spacing, and shorter chapters. Audiobooks count too!

📝 3. Keep a Summer Journal
Have your child write a few sentences a day about their activities, using drawings or stickers to help. Spelling doesn’t have to be perfect—just encourage expression!

🧠 4. Use Multi-Sensory Learning
Write letters in shaving cream, spell with magnetic letters, or trace words in sand. Engage touch, sight, sound—make it stick!

💻 5. Use Tech Tools That Support Learning
Try speech-to-text or text-to-speech tools like Google Read&Write, or the Voice Dream Reader app.

📚 Early Signs of Dyslexia in Young Children

Did you know? Dyslexia can often be identified before a child starts reading. Early intervention can make a big difference in confidence and academic success.

🔍 Watch for these early signs in preschool and early elementary-aged children:

✅ Difficulty learning letter names and sounds
✅ Trouble rhyming (e.g., cat, hat, bat)
✅ Delayed speech or pronunciation issues
✅ Struggles with remembering sequences (like days of the week or ABCs)
✅ Trouble learning to write their name
✅ Avoidance of books or reading activities
✅ Family history of reading challenges

🌱 Early detection = early support. If your child shows several of these signs, trust your instincts and consider speaking with a pediatrician, reading specialist, or school team.

💡 What is Dyslexia? Let’s Break It Down.

Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects how the brain processes written language—especially reading, spelling, and writing.

🧠 It’s not a sign of low intelligence or lack of effort. In fact, many people with dyslexia are creative thinkers and problem-solvers.

Here’s the thing: dyslexia doesn’t mean your child can’t learn—it means they learn differently.

📚 Parenting a Child with Dyslexia: Tips & Tricks That Make a Difference 💡

Supporting a child with dyslexia can feel overwhelming—but you are not alone. We’re here to walk this journey with you! Here are some tried-and-true tips and tricks to help your child thrive at home:

✅ 1. Read with your child daily
Don’t worry about perfection—focus on connection. Take turns reading, use audiobooks, or follow along together to build fluency and confidence.

✅ 2. Use multi-sensory tools
Incorporate sight, sound, and touch! Try tracing letters in sand, using magnetic letters, or apps that read aloud while highlighting words.

✅ 3. Keep routines consistent
Predictability is powerful. Set aside a regular time for reading, homework, and breaks to reduce anxiety and support focus.

✅ 4. Celebrate effort over accuracy
Progress over perfection! Praise persistence and problem-solving—these are superpowers for dyslexic learners.

✅ 5. Break big tasks into smaller steps
Chunk instructions and give your child time to process. One step at a time = success.

✅ 6. Be your child’s biggest cheerleader
Self-esteem matters. Let them know dyslexia is just one part of who they are—not a limit on what they can do.

📚✨ Let’s Talk: Dyslexia & Learning – What Every Parent and Educator Should Know! ✨📚
Brought to you by the Bonnie Bailey Dyslexia Foundation

Dyslexia is more than just flipping letters — it’s a different way of processing language, and it affects 1 in 5 students. That’s 20% of the population! Let’s bust some myths and spread the facts:

🔍 Fact #1: Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence.
Students with dyslexia are just as smart as their peers — often more creative, curious, and gifted in problem-solving!

🧠 Fact #2: Dyslexia is a brain-based difference in how language is processed.
It’s neurological, not visual. It affects reading, spelling, and writing — but not thinking, imagination, or comprehension.

🎓 Fact #3: Early intervention is key.
With the right structured literacy instruction (like Orton-Gillingham), students can learn to read successfully.

💬 Fact #4: Dyslexia often runs in families.
It’s highly hereditary — if one family member is diagnosed, it’s a good idea to screen siblings too.

🎨 Fact #5: Many students with dyslexia excel in areas like art, engineering, storytelling, music, and entrepreneurship.
It’s not a deficit — it’s a different learning profile.

🚫 Fact #6: Without support, students with dyslexia can struggle with self-esteem and anxiety.
That’s why identification and accommodations matter. Small changes = big impact.

✅ Fact #7: Accommodations are not cheating.
Audiobooks, extra time, and speech-to-text tools give students equal access to learning.

🌟 The takeaway?
Dyslexia doesn’t need to hold students back — it just means they need to be taught differently. And when we teach differently, they thrive.

❤️ Let’s build awareness. Let’s build confidence. Let’s build brighter futures.

Welcome to the Bonnie Bailey Dyslexia Foundation page!

The Bonnie Bailey Dyslexia Foundation (BBDF) is a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible, non-profit organization established in the state of West Virginia in 2020 by Todd and Rachel Wood. This foundation was created to honor their dear friend, Bonnie Bailey, who passed away in April 2020. Bonnie was deeply passionate about helping children with dyslexia, especially those who were falling through the cracks and not receiving the support they needed.

Both the Wood and Bailey families share personal journeys as parents of children with dyslexia. Their children’s progress was achieved through extensive intervention, and their mission is to extend this same opportunity to others who face the challenges of dyslexia.

Our Mission

Students with dyslexia are intelligent and creative people who are judged because of their struggles with basic reading skills.
When teachers are given the right resources, they can empower students with dyslexia to overcome their disability.
Unfortunately, teachers are given a lot of misinformation and a lack of resources.
We want to raise awareness and support students, parents and teachers in their efforts to provide the kind of instruction dyslexic students need to succeed.

Our Work

We are committed to:

• Facilitating screening and diagnostics to identify dyslexia.
• Providing education and training for parents and teachers to better understand dyslexia and how to address it.
• Offering guidance and direction to families and educators to access the necessary resources for remediation.

Bonnie’s vision lives on through the foundation’s work, and we are determined to ensure that no child is left behind. Join us in making a difference by spreading awareness, engaging in our programs, or supporting our mission.

Stay tuned for updates, resources, events, and opportunities to get involved. Together, we can build a brighter future for children with dyslexia!
