At the request of gun-control activists such as Mark Bryant, founder of the Gun Violence Archive, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention removed its defensive gun-use data in May 2022. Bryant had complained that gun-rights advocates frequently cited the estimates to “stop [gun-control] legislation,” The Trump administration restored the post as it originally appeared before the CDC removed it and has now corrected an error in the original version. This was the CDC’s original post.

This is a very interesting conversation and has significant insights on performance under stress and decision making.
One of the big takeaways is that even if our marksmanship is on point, if we remain in a flat range mentality and don’t train in a manner commensurate with an actual engagement we are likely at a disadvantage.
The question then is how do actually do that. This is where competitive shooting enters the chat. Competitive style shooting, whether as part of an organized league or just running similar stages on your own adds much of the stress and decision making that is necessary in real life self defense.
Keep in mind that competition shooting is meant to be a test of your marksmanship under pressure. If you treat it like a tactical engagement you’re missing the real value.

There are few guarantees in life but one thing is for sure, change is inevitable.
When it comes to the fundamentals of shooting many things have changed over the years that have helped push the boundaries of what we thought was possible regarding speed and accuracy.
That’s one reason I have always tried to attend two professionally lead training classes every year.
