Happy Friday! Our next spotlight is on Kelsey Unroe

Hometown: Daniels, WV
Undergraduate University and Degree: Concord University BS in Biology (Pre-Physical Therapy Emphasis) with a minor in sports medicine
Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I have competed in pageants my entire life and you can even find me in the background on an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras. I also enjoy sports and participated in soccer, track, gymnastics and I was a college cheerleader.
Why did you choose PT: I choose PT because I have always has a passion for working in the healthcare field. My brother has a friend with down syndrome so I was always around him and other kids with disabilities and realized I enjoyed working with children. I have also seen how PT can influence the life of a child who has been affected by the opioid epidemic in WV so I decided to pursue a career in PT with a goal of working in pediatrics.

Back and better than ever after Spring Break!!

Next up is Ashley McManamay

Undergraduate University and Degree: Shepherd University, BS in Health Promotion & Exercise Science
Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I am an avid scrapbooker with an eclectic music taste from the golden oldies to early 2000’s rock. I am deeply devoted to Law & Order: SVU and have been watching reruns for at least 5 years straight.
Why did you choose PT: I began college with the intention of going into the medical field but was unsure of my actual path. During my sophomore year of college I took a course on applied anatomy taught by an MPT and started to explore the possibilities of physical therapy. Growing up, I was raised between multiple households but always maintained a strong relationship with my grandparents who remained parental figures for me. Throughout my life, I have seen them take care of their parents, their children, and multiple grandchildren. This gave me an appreciation for not only the human body but the aging population and their resilience despite chronic illness and physical limitations. Committing to the occupation of physical therapy has given me the gift of knowledge to give back and take care of the individuals who have spent their lives taking care of others.

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I am a twin and during my free time I enjoy going on hikes, playing any pick up sports like basketball and spikeball, and also travel when I get the chance to.
Why did you choose PT: I chose PT because of a few reasons. One reason is because of my twin brother. He has cerebral palsy so with that, we always had therapists around. I have seen the impact that those therapists have had on my brother’s life and I wanted to be able to do something like that too. Another reason I chose PT was after I completed some observation hours, I really enjoyed the day to day work PTs were able to provide of their patients and the reward the therapists get when their patients start regaining their function back.

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and moved here in 2005. I love to travel and look forward to pursuing a career in travel PT!
Why did you choose PT: A typical 9-5 desk job never appealed to me and I have always been attracted to anything involving physical activity, working with my hands, and helping others. Therefore physical therapy seemed like the perfect career to me.

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I am a new dad! Our little boy Rowan was born the beginning of the spring semester of PT school and it made for a wonderful and challenging semester. I also ride a unicycle.
Why did you choose PT: I chose PT school because I had marvellous experiences shadowing and working with PTs. I sprained my ankle more times that I can count in high school playing various sports and it was their expertise that kept me playing.

Makayla Smith
Hometown: Millstone, WV
Undergraduate University and Degree: West Virginia Wesleyan College - BS in Exercise Science with a minor in Human Biology
Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: During undergrad, I traveled to Grenada with two close friends and completed a 1-month long PT internship in an outpatient clinic and hospital. While I was there, I got to experience snorkeling for the first time at the world’s first underwater sculpture park!
Why did you choose PT: Like many others, I grew up with an interest in the medical field. In high school, I was first introduced to physical therapy after experiencing a sports-related injury. Close to the same time, my cousin suffered a spinal cord injury and experienced many months of physical therapy. Both of these experiences opened my eyes to how important and rewarding this career can be. Physical therapy gives me the opportunity to help others and I hope I am able to positively impact every patient I meet!

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I grew up coming to every WVU football game as my dad was the WV State Policeman assigned to head coach Rich Rodriguez and Bill Stewart.
Why did you choose PT: I have always been interested in the medical field, and I took extra interest in anatomy starting in high school. As I researched possible careers, I chose to pursue Physical Therapy as I enjoyed sports and it involved a great understanding of the human body and its performance. Also, I love how rewarding the career of Physical Therapy is as we are able to see patients functional progress from day one to their last day of therapy. I can’t wait to help patients get back to the activities they love to do. I currently have an interest in one day working with pediatric patients!

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: My family had the opportunity to foster service dogs for the WVU Hearts of Gold program growing up.
Why did you choose PT: Growing up, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field and was always interested in sports, injuries, and recovery. I was only a 7th grader when the career of physical therapy struck me at a career day in middle school, and I was hooked ever since. Working as a PT aide through undergrad in the inpatient and outpatient settings solidified my interest to pursue this career. I experience immense joy from this profession knowing that I can play a role in the improvements of patients’ function, abilities, and interests.

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: While at my first duty station, I helped deliver babies at Walter Reed Hospital.
Why did you choose PT: I was fortunate to be a student-athlete studying Exercise Science and first became exposed to the PT field through personal injuries, internships, and volunteer experiences. After I graduated, I joined the Navy. I was passionate to help and serve others, and thus pursued the medical field as a Hospital Corpsman. I received training in all aspects of general medicine, with an emphasis on Combat Medicine and Rehabilitation. I became interested in the deeply rooted history of PT in the military, and decided to specialize in Physical Therapy. Throughout my years in the Navy, I had the opportunity to provide direct patient care to service members sustaining various mechanisms of injury and illness. I realized the challenges presented during a patient’s journey towards healing, and I wanted to be part of their mission. I learned that restoring function is only one step in the path to holistic recovery; however, helping others achieve self-efficacy and improve quality of life is my intrinsic motivation I discovered through PT. The profession of PT has built its’ home in my heart, and I plan to dedicate my career to empowering others to reach their goals.

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I hiked Mount Washington and Mount Katahdin. I enjoy hiking and traveling, and I am always looking for a new adventure!
Why did you choose PT: When I was 12, I experienced an incident which almost resulted in an amputation of my hand. Luckily, with an emergency fasciotomy and 6 months of PT, I was able to regain most function in my hand. Since then, I have been interested in the process of rehabilitation, and I love helping others.

Interesting/Fun Fact about yourself: I hiked Half Dome in Yosemite, it was a total of 26 miles and 8839 feet of elevation. I completed the hike in one day!
Why did you choose PT: I chose PT after working in an inpatient stroke rehabilitation facility in Detroit. I saw what a profound and meaningful impact physical therapy can have on people’s lives. Through treating the human movement system we have the ability to help patients reach their full potential. PT challenges me and allows me to combine my love for anatomy and physiology with my passion for helping others.
