EJ, our bearded dragon ambassador with MBD, has passed away. If you saw EJ at any of our events, you heard me mention that his lifespan could be affected by his past neglect. He was receiving antibiotic injections to try and fight it, but ultimately, there was nothing more that could be done. I found him passed in his sleep a couple of days after Christmas. He was only four years old. The night before, one of our sweet cats, Mako, also passed unexpectedly. I found them both, ten hours apart. I’ve never experienced back-to-back losses like this. The beginning of the year has been tough. Good news—everyone else is healthy and thriving, and winter will be over soon-ish. Rest peacefully, sweet boys 🦎🐱🪽🩷

Over the years, I've been surrendered several ball pythons. People often impulse-buy them because wild-type ball pythons are very cheap and incredibly common in pet stores. One of my surrenders was named Pumpkin. It was a difficult decision to rehome her, but ultimately I did. I had another surrender, named Cuddles, that was better suited for programs. Cuddles passed away from an infection (surrendered reptiles can come in with hidden issues caused by neglect or improper care) that ballooned in her face not long after Pumpkin went to her new home. Fast forward two years, and Pumpkin laid a fertile clutch of eggs. I was offered one of the babies, and I couldn’t say no to a little Pumpkin. I’d normally never get a baby ball python because of all the adult ones in rescues that need homes. But having history with Pumpkin, I couldn’t pass on this little one. Long story short, meet Seed, because she came from Pumpkin. 🎃🌱🐍

Off to do a snake identification and safety program for some kiddos. Don't pick up and any wild snakes if you're not 100% sure you've identified the species as a non-venomous one.

Izzy got so much attention at our last program! While she’s an adorable and very friendly lizard bearded dragons are not great starter lizards. They require a lot of room, high heat, strong UVB, and a particular diet. Leopard geckos and crested geckos are a great place to start!
