On Monday, August 31, our GEAR UP students visited the Shannon School of Aeronautics and Eastern Virginia Career College.

At the Shannon School of Aeronautics, students spoke with pilots who had between 8 and 50 years of flying experience. Students were able to sit in the cockpits of several single-engine planes, tour the inside of an 86-year-old Douglas DC-3, and view dozens of other aircraft. The pilots also invited our students to return for a future flight tour!

At Eastern Virginia Career College, students learned about the many educational and career pathways available. EVCC offers accelerated associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs in healthcare, technology, and wellness.

WHS GEAR UP hosted a Junior Q&A session for the Class of 2027 on May 19, 2026.

Our students had the opportunity to hear from WHS alumni and several members of the Class of 2026 as they shared their postsecondary experiences, successes, and future plans. From college and career pathways to lessons learned along the way, our panelists provided valuable advice.

An important piece of advice shared by several of the panelists was simple: prioritize your education. They emphasized that the effort students invest in their education today will open doors and create opportunities for their future whether they choose college, the military, trade school, or work.

Our GEAR UP students had an amazing experience on April 13 visiting Marymount University and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum!

They enjoyed a wonderful campus tour and lunch, giving them a glimpse into college life. The day continued with a planetarium program, Oasis in Space, which explored water as the key ingredient for life and the search for planets with water in our solar system.

Thank you to Marymount University for giving our students this opportunity!
