It's hard to believe.. but it's been 50 years - half a century - since many of us started our first day of school in kindergarten. I don't know exactly what day it was - but figured it was time to note it.

Back in those days, kindergarten was different:

* Kindergarten was optional. It was completely up to the parents whether to send their children to kindergarten.

* Kindergarten was half a day. We dismissed around lunchtime (does anyone remember exactly what time our day started and ended)?

* Our parents took turns with other parents on picking up and dropping off - we were not riding the school bus yet. If your experience was different, please note that.

* Kindergarten was not just another grade. We had our own school, separate from the 1st-3rd grade students at WC Whaley.

* We were exposed to things such as learning how to make a telephone call, colors, months of the year, days of the week, etc. Letters of the alphabet and reading did not start until 1st grade. If you remember anything else about what we covered then, please note that.

Fifty years have gone by quickly. The way schools do kindergarten has changed significantly.

If you are not aware, Mr Barry Hall (our HS principal) is having some medical issues. Please pray for a speedy recovery for Mr. Hall:
From Dane Hall: "He had knee replacement surgery on Thursday. He is still in Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton, AR. Daddy is having a very hard time. The knee is doing well, but the anesthesia had a terrible effect on him. He is still very confused. I will not help him get out of bed because he is only supposed to move with assistance from physical therapy at this point. Today he insisted on getting up and going to the school. He said those kids deserve an education, and he needs to be there for them. Because I refused to help him get out of bed, he is extremely angry with me, and I extremely don’t care. Hopefully he will go to inpatient rehab in Monticello tomorrow, and hopefully his thinking will clear up."
