Love horses and enjoy talking with people? Join the Minnesota Horse Council at the Aisle of Breeds and help introduce fairgoers to Minnesota’s horse community.

Volunteers will staff the Minnesota Horse Council table in the Horse Barn, share information about the Council and Minnesota Horse Expo, and answer visitors’ questions. We’ll provide the information and instructions you need.

Volunteer benefits:

🐴 A chance to spend time surrounded by horses
🐴 An easy, meaningful way to support Minnesota’s equine community

Shifts are just 3½ hours Aug. 27-Sept. 7 (except Sept. 1), and volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

🔥 Wildfire Smoke & Horse Health 🐴💨
Poor air quality can be harmful not only to us but our horses too. Smoke from wildfires can irritate a horse's respiratory system and cause fatigue, coughing, difficulty breathing, etc.
You can monitor local air quality at www.airnow.gov. During periods of poor air quality, you can protect your horse's health by:
🐎 Limiting or avoiding exercise.
💧 Providing free access to fresh water.
💦 Controlling dust such as watering dry lots and soaking or feeding dust-free hay.
🕰 Allowing time for recovery: airway damage from wildfire smoke takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal after air quality returns to normal.
☎️ Consult your vet if you notice signs of smoke irritation.

Providing free access to clean, cool (45 to 65 degrees F) water is key to helping your horse stay hydrated during the heat. Here are a few other tips to remember over the next few days.
☀️ Allow hot horses a few swallows of cool, fresh water every few minutes to combat the effects of heat stress.
🧽 Clean water sources more often during hot weather to prevent algae and bacterial growth.
❌ Do not allow horses to drink from lakes, ponds, or streams. Blue algae toxicity is more common during dry, hot weather.
💧 Consider providing electrolytes to horses that have been sweating heavily or you expect to do so. If you add electrolytes to drinking water, also offer plain water. Some horses don’t like the taste of electrolytes and will drink less. Only use electrolytes formulated for horses. Courtesy of the University of MN Equine Extension.

Hot & Humid Weather: Know the Limits for Your Horse
Horses can acclimate to hot, humid conditions, but there’s a limit to what they can safely handle.
💡 Adding the air temperature (degrees F) and relative humidity (%) together can provide a useful indicator of your horse's ability to cool down. If this value is
✅ Less than 130 – Horses cool effectively.
⚠️ 130 to 150 – Cooling ability is reduced. Use caution.
🚫 Over 150 – Cooling is greatly reduced.
❗ Over 180 – Conditions may be fatal if your horse is stressed.
📍Example: 92°F + 69% humidity = 161 — this is a high-risk zone.
These numbers are a helpful guide when considering if it's safe to exercise your horse. However, always consider your horse’s unique condition and needs too.
