Cold temperatures to the body can affect your heart, strenuous activity can also affect your heart. Snow shoveling takes both of these factors, and combines them, and if roads are bad, it's going to take an ambulance longer to reach the ER to get someone the proper cardiac care that they need. When it's said to "Don't go out unless absolutely necessary" take this to heart, no pun intended. If you have to shovel, wait for an update on local roads leading to a hospital that has the proper staff and equipment to care for you. Snow shoveling and heart attacks are an eerily common happening. The ambulance is more than happy to help you, but can only do so much when the roads are in bad condition. Be safe.

I know I've already posted about this a few times, but if anyone is interested, my friend, a Critical Care Paramedic, who's been serving in EMS for more than 30 years will be teaching an EMT class in the Belle Plaine area in February. The class typically lasts about one semester, the in person sessions will be in Belle Plaine and Chelsea, through Marshalltown Community College. This class will also be used for people who are already EMTs as a refresher and then they will continue with training to obtain the Advanced EMT certification. In person EMT classes have become pretty rare here in eastern Iowa, so this is an opportunity that is not guaranteed to happen again in the near future, and the price is nearly $1000 less than the other local colleges are offering it for. This class does not mean that you are obligated to volunteer on a service in Benton County, you can utilize it anywhere as long as you obtain national and state certification through the national registers testing. If you're someone in the Cedar Rapids or Belle Plaine area, who works in law or fire, and want to add EMS to your resume, this is a great opportunity, or if you work a different type of job and happen to have occasional free time you want to burn, this is also a great opportunity. Please consider it. 😁 If anyone is interested or you know somebody who may be interested, please let me know. Thanks😁😁😁

Something that should never fly in EMS is a higher level of care talking down on a lower level of care and saying that "they're only good for driving and carrying things" and laughing about it. All paramedics start out at the EMT level, remember where you came from and how you'd like a higher level of care to treat you. An EMT basic can save a patient's life too, running a call doing the most advanced interventions in the BLS scope of practice and have the patient stabilized, conscious alert and oriented, before the Paramedic even arrives for the ALS measures. If you're an EMR, or an EMT, don't be discouraged by a higher level of care talking down on you, there's a lot you can do to save a patient's life and you're definitely more useful than just carrying equipment and driving. You're a link in the chain of survival. EMRs, EMTs, A-EMTs, and PMs are all a valuable part of the EMS system. And all levels from highest to lowest need to remember that. This post was inspired due to an unfortunate post's comments that I follow on my personal page.
