Today in Short Story Workshop we are learning about tension and a simple formula to create it — desire + danger = tension.

Here’s a five minute writing exercise: write a scene where a character has to make a dangerous decision in order to get their desire.

INDIVIDUAL MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE
Ages 10+

Do you already have a project draft and would like feedback as you head into revising? Sign-up for a manuscript critique!

Here's how it will work:

Submit up to 20 double-spaced pages of writing in prose (short stories, novel excerpt, nonfiction) or 7 single-spaced pages of poetry per session to receive personalized feedback.

Students will receive marginalia notes, a letter with suggestions, and an in-person discussion of feedback to generate ideas.

Writers will have the opportunity to be included in a student chapbook and participate in a group reading at the end of the season.

All levels of experience welcome!

THE HERMIT CRAB ESSAY
Fall 2025 class

Like hermit crabs, this type of essay relies on resourcefulness to find new and exciting shells. Learn how to tell stories (both true and imagined) through unconventional formats (ex: shopping lists, application forms).

✍️Students will view examples, workshop their ideas, and then create their own hermit crab essay.

✍️Partner and whole class sharing of drafts will be available to all students, but is not required. Resources will be provided for publication venues.

📗Writers will have the opportunity to be included in a student chapbook and participate in a group reading at the end of the season.

Join me this fall to learn new writing techniques, find inspiration, and become part of a supportive and generative literary community!
