Eldridge Dickey is one of the greatest signal callers in college football history. “The Lord’s Prayer” as he was affectionately know attended Tennessee State University from 1965-1968 and was drafted in the first round by the Oakland Raiders.
Quarterbacks this is a significant post as it reinforces the fundamentals of passing the football. Mr. Dickey’s release emphasizes an elbow position that is even or higher than the shoulder.
The extension in his throwing arm is incredible (straight arm). His head position is still not allowing for leaning during the delivery of the football. His off hand position prevents over rotation. Tom Brady often talks about the C position of the hand well Dickey was doing that in the mid 60s.
Guys, those who played before us established a solid foundation in which to build our game upon. The more things appear to change the more they stay the same!
Quarterbacks during my studies of how position fundamentals translate across sports.
A serve in tennis share many elements of passing a football.
1. Elbow higher than the shoulder
2. Generating Force through the feet and hip rotation.
3. Maintaining a bent front knee for stability
4. Tremendous follow through that finishes with the serve/passing shoulder finishing at the target.
This is another example of working on your passing mechanics without the aide of a football or wide receivers.
Let’s go Quarterbacks!!!
RMQI Quarterback Training Saturday May 30th please DM me for details.
Quarterbacks this drill does an effective job of teaching release point and extension. Notice how Kyrie is extending to the point where his forearm rest on the string.
This drill can be executed with two (2) people and a string. You can do this in your yard, park, or football field. The main goal is to release the football at the point of contact with the string!
Marshall University Quarterback Dylan works his quick game footwork and air throw technique as a warmup exercise.
There are a few points of emphasis for younger Quarterbacks to pay attention too.
1. Look how quickly he gets his non throwing foot on the ground (this leads to a quicker delivery).
2. The tempo of his slide drop technique keeps him in rhythm and on balance.
3. His air throw motion demonstrates great extension. Guys notice how straight his arm is during his follow through.
4. Finally notice the bend in his front knee. This keeps the flight of the football on a more level plane. When guys knees straighten the football typically dives into the ground(sometimes it sails based on timing of the release).
Guys and girls you can work on your footwork and throwing motion alone, so get out there and play to win…no excuses!
