Happy 73rd Birthday to the Original September 23rd Woman of Honor, my mother, Evangelist Norma Wilson!
Before there was an S23, there was HER.
September 23rd will forever be sacred to me. The day God allowed my mother to be birthed is the same day, years later, that He allowed me to birth my vision: Theta Phi Sigma Christian Sorority, Inc. I don’t take the significance of that lightly.
My mother is the woman who taught me ministry, class, excellence, strength, and how to serve God with consistency.
Her journey began in Houlka, Chickasaw County, Mississippi, and carried her from Tupelo to St. Louis, to Savannah, Georgia, where I was born, to Berlin, Germany, (where my father served) and around the world as an Army wife. Through every transition, she carried her faith, her family, her gifts, and her commitment to ministry with her.
Professionally, she served for years in federal civil service as a medical transcriptionist, including service with the VA Medical Center in Tuscaloosa and the 42nd Medical Group at Maxwell Air Force Base. But her service has never been confined to a career.
Across this country and even during her years in Berlin, Germany, she has helped build and strengthen ministries. She has trained leaders, poured into God’s people, served faithfully in the Body of Christ, and helped others develop in their own assignments.
She is a revivalist and an anointed singer whose powerful, soul-stirring voice has been compared to the vocal stylings of the legendary Mahalia Jackson. When Mother Wilson sings, she doesn’t simply sing a song; she ministers it. Her voice carries the sound of the church, the testimony of a woman who has walked with God, and the conviction of someone who believes what she sings.
And there is a reason so many affectionately call her “Mother Wilson.” 🩷
She mothers beyond biology. She nurtures. She teaches. She corrects. She prays. She imparts. And when God places someone in her path to develop, she takes that assignment seriously.
At 73, she is still serving, still teaching, still imparting, still singing, still leading, and still pouring.
So while September 23rd marks the founding of something God entrusted to me, this day belonged to my mother first. And perhaps there is something beautifully prophetic about God allowing one legacy to be born on the same date another legacy would eventually be birthed. Mom, so much of what people see in me was first modeled before me through you. Thank you for teaching me that ministry and excellence can coexist, that how you carry yourself matters, and that true leadership is ultimately about service.
73 years of life.
73 years of grace.
73 years of ministry.
73 years of impact.
73 years of LEGACY.
