Charter schools are part of the public school system. Families do not pay tuition.

They have the freedom to design their own programs, teaching methods, and school culture. Many focus on specific themes like place-based learning, STEM, arts, college prep, or career pathways.

📊 **Accountability**
Charter schools operate under a “charter” (a performance contract) approved by an authorizer. They must meet the same accountability standards as traditional public schools in addition to the academic and financial goals required by the authorizer— or they can be closed.

Families choose to apply. If more students apply than there are seats available, a lottery is usually held.
