We are so proud of Miranda!

For Miranda Sennett, nursing wasn’t just a career choice but a calling that became clearer with every step of her journey.

Before becoming a registered nurse, Miranda worked as a medical assistant in one of Grandview's outpatient clinics after earning her degree in Microbiology. Although she always knew she wanted to build a career in healthcare, it was working directly with patients at the outpatient clinic that confirmed this. “I fell in love with patient care,” Miranda said. “I knew I wanted a role where I could take on even more responsibility."

When the University of Montevallo announced its new nursing program, Miranda took a leap of faith. As the only student of the program’s very first cohort, she benefited from close mentorship with the faculty, additional clinical experience and classes that were fit to her learning style. The experience shaped her into the nurse she is today and inspired her to give back by asking to volunteer with the program as it continues to grow.

During nursing school, Miranda completed her preceptorship in Grandview Medical Center’s Labor & Delivery unit. “I already knew some of the team and the unit, so coming back was comforting.” she said. “Grandview made the transition from student to nurse feel natural.”

Today, Miranda works the night shift in Labor & Delivery, caring for mothers and babies during some of life’s most meaningful moments. She says the supportive culture and willingness of co-workers to teach and mentor have made all the difference as she has grown in her career.

Miranda’s advice for those considering nursing is simple: “Jump in. Don’t let the fear of starting hold you back. Be willing to learn, ask where you are needed and get your hands dirty.”

For Miranda, Grandview has been more than a place where she works. It’s where her passion for nursing became a profession, supported by a team committed to helping her grow while providing compassionate care to every family she serves.

What a fantastic way to wrap up the semester! Our 3rd semester nursing students spent the day rotating through Labor & Delivery simulation scenarios in small groups, putting their knowledge, clinical judgment, teamwork, and communication skills into practice. It was a full day of hands-on learning, and every group did an outstanding job! Although we only captured a photo of the last group of the day, we are incredibly proud of all of our students and the dedication they have shown throughout the semester. We wish our students continued success as they move forward in their nursing journey.
A special thank you to Chrystal Smith, clinical adjunct faculty, for taking the time to be such a valuable part of our simulation day. Your expertise, encouragement, and support made a meaningful impact on our students' learning experience. You were amazing!

The afternoon session on July 6th, featured a hands-on learning experience with the Alabaster Fire Department’s decontamination trailer. Chief Dyson, along with department representatives, explained the decontamination process and procedures, demonstrated its use, and discussed how these mobile units safely remove hazardous chemicals or pathogens while helping prevent contamination from entering healthcare facilities. Students also practiced properly donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE), reinforcing essential skills for disaster response and the safe care of patients during hazardous materials and infectious disease incidents.
Thank you to the Montevallo and Alabaster Fire Departments for giving their time and resources for these invaluable real-world training opportunities!

Yesterday morning, our nursing students participated in an exciting interdisciplinary disaster response drill at Myrick Hall on the University of Montevallo campus in collaboration with the Montevallo Fire Department. Working alongside the fire department, students applied the START triage process, prioritized patient care, communicated with the interprofessional team, and responded to a realistic mass casualty scenario portrayed by volunteer simulated patients.

This hands-on experience strengthened clinical judgment, teamwork, and emergency preparedness while reinforcing the critical role of collaboration during disaster response. A sincere thank you to Assistant Chief Lance Byrd, Captain Matt Rush, Critical Care Registered Nurse and Fire Medic Chandler Rockett, our dedicated simulated patients, faculty, and everyone who helped make this valuable learning experience possible.

Our Population Health students participated in immersive Global Health Scenarios today in class. The teaching-learning activity was inspired by the actual work of medical/nurse volunteer organizations that serve in Peru.

As students “traveled” through the Amazon, Cajamarca, Cusco, and Lima, they encountered region-specific health challenges. Students encountered scenarios ranging from caring for individuals with mosquito-borne illnesses in the Amazon and teaching families how to filter contaminated water after flooding, to providing maternal care in remote mountain communities and recognizing altitude sickness in travelers visiting the Andes.

Through teamwork, clinical decision-making, and community education, they strengthened their assessment skills, cultural humility, and preparation to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care in resource-limited settings.
