I HAVE A NAME!
An ongoing theme in our classroom is “I HAVE A NAME!”
As children learn to recognize their own names and explore the letters that make them unique, they are also beginning to understand that letters have sounds and that names are an important part of who we are.
This learning extends beyond recognizing our own names. We encourage children to learn and use the names of their friends within our classroom community. It may seem easier to call out “Hey, you!” or simply begin talking to someone, but using a person’s name helps build connection, fosters a sense of belonging, and reminds each child that they are seen, known, and valued.
To bring this concept to life, our children participated in a sticky, sensory-rich name activity! Each child was given a sturdy base with their name written on it. They explored the lines, curves, and shapes of each letter, using their hands and senses to engage with the letters that make up their names.
Our younger children focused on exploring the sticky texture and filling their name platforms, while some of our older children began by carefully tracing and outlining the letters of their names. Some went on to fill their entire platforms—and that’s perfectly okay, too! Each child engaged with the experience in their own way, at their own pace.
