FAFSA Beta is live! Should I file?

At USA Tutors & College Prep. Services, we recommend that students and parents/guardians create their accounts and passwords now because they can take a few days to process. However, we encourage families to wait until October 1st, when the beta test ends, to file.

Some families find it an easy and smooth process filing during the beta testing period, but the fact is that they’re working out the kinks in the system, and it can cause significant problems if you’re one of the families caught up in a problem they are identifying with the system this year.

Waiting another week or so lets the Department of Education work out many of those problems so that it’s a quick and smooth process for your family.

Remember that, while it’s nice to have financial aid offers in hand sooner versus later, there’s no reason for families to commit this early unless you have a recruited athlete. Even schools with limited housing will be OK for a while.

Most families should use between when they receive their acceptances and aid offers and May 1st to negotiate with your top schools for the best package possible. The closer you come to the commitment deadline in May, the more that many schools, more private than public, are willing to negotiate and provide more assistance.

What do you think? Are we going in the right direction?

If you've ever looked at a private university's price tag and thought "not a chance," this is worth two minutes. Boston University just announced the BU Promise: starting in 2026–27, families earning under $200,000 will pay no more than $20,000 a year — and financial aid packages won't include loans at all.

Families earning $75,000 or less pay nothing, including housing and dining.

That's at a school where tuition alone runs $73,024. BU joins MIT and Harvard in making tuition free under the $200,000 mark, and it changes the math for a lot of families building college lists right now.

Share this with a parent who assumed schools like this were out of reach.

What are direct admit schools, and why should we care?

Direct admit schools on the Common App are legitimate offers.

However, you receive 20 slots to apply to schools on the Common App. If you use several of them for these direct admit schools, you are taking up part of your 20-school quota.

Do not pursue this path unless you have researched these schools, know that they are a good fit, and have the open slots to still apply to the schools that you want.

While the direct admit schools are an expedited process, we recommend that students still give it their full time and attention including writing any mandatory and optional supplemental essays. These responses, including the personal statement/main essay that may even be listed as optional, can and often do yield higher merit aid and consideration for extra opportunities such as the Honors College and/or a special scholarship if you’re eligible.

In other words, don’t just click, click, click to be able to say you were admitted to X number of schools. Confirm that the school is a good fit before applying. Give it your best effort.

Remember that, if you’re seriously considering the school, you need to list it on FAFSA when the FAFSA goes live.
