The ASALH Branch proudly stands with the Mobile County Community Remembrance Project Coalition and Equal Justice Initiative.

This dedication ceremony is an opportunity for our community to acknowledge the truth of our history, honor the memories of those whose lives were taken unjustly, and recommit ourselves to justice, remembrance, and reconciliation.
We invite community members, educators, faith leaders, students, and advocates to stand together in remembrance and reflection.

ASALH members Shalela Dowdy, Sharrell Edmond, and Jasmine Cook - Washington supported the candidate forum hosted by the Greater Mobile, AL Chapter of The Links, Incorporated in partnership with NPHC, Mobile United, and the Mobile League of Women Voters. Forums like this matter because they create space for our community to ask real questions, hear clear plans, and hold candidates accountable on issues that directly impact Black communities in Mobile.

ASALH is proud of our members for encouraging participation and supporting events that strengthen democracy through informed conversations. Let’s make sure our voices are present, our questions are thoughtful, and our community is represented!

As we start March, we are pleased to announce the launch of the "Southern Reading Collective", a Mobile and/or Alabama-focused Black history book club. "Moonrise Over New Jessup" by Jamila Minnicks will be our first book. Every other month, we will choose a new text to read and explore as a collective.

We will meet via Zoom on March 31st at 6 PM to discuss our first book. Share with your friends, your networks, social/civic groups, etc. Individuals do not have to members of ASALH to participate in the Southern Reading Collective.

Spotlight on Carter G. Woodson: The Father of Black History Month!

Who is Carter G. Woodson?
Born on December 19, 1875, Woodson was the son of formerly enslaved parents. Despite facing numerous challenges, he pursued education tirelessly, earning his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1912. He was determined to highlight the contributions of African Americans to history, which had often been overlooked or misrepresented.
