My Writing & Illustration Philosophy

My books are a little different than the typical children’s book—and they’re meant to be.

While many children’s books are written specifically for beginning readers, my stories are designed to bring generations together. Some of the vocabulary, history, and themes may be more advanced than a child would read alone, and that’s intentional. These books are created to be shared by parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers reading alongside a child.

I believe some of life’s greatest lessons happen when stories become conversations.

Each book offers more than an entertaining story. It blends local history, meaningful life lessons, and beautifully illustrated adventures into one shared reading experience. As children listen, they discover new places, meet memorable characters, and learn about the communities around them. At the same time, the adults reading with them are often reminded of places they knew, traditions they remember, and stories they can pass on.

One of the things that makes my books unique is the way I combine art with history. Throughout my illustrations, I often incorporate real photographs from both the past and the present. These images are carefully woven into the artwork, allowing readers to compare yesterday with today and experience history in a personal way. My hope is that these moments spark curiosity, encourage conversations, and inspire families to share their own stories.

Every community has treasures worth remembering. Every family has stories worth preserving.

Whether the setting is a small Midwestern town, a family farm, a school, or a local celebration, my goal is to capture the heart of everyday life before those memories disappear. I want children to understand where they come from, and I want adults to have opportunities to pass along the experiences, values, and history that shaped them.

My books are not simply stories to be read once and placed back on a shelf. They are invitations to slow down, sit together, ask questions, laugh, remember, and create new memories while preserving old ones.

If my books inspire one grandparent to tell another story, one child to ask another question, or one family to treasure their community a little more, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I set out to do.

Because stories are more than words on a page—they are bridges between generations.

This book was written with one hope—that the stories of our hometown will continue to be passed from one generation to the next. I hope this music video inspires children and families to discover the history all around them. Thank you for being part of the journey. Www.woodbineartisan.com

I’m excited to share the music video for A Trip Through Time at Woodbine… with a Little Help from Archie the Attic Mouse.

This isn’t just a children’s book. It’s a celebration of hometown pride, history, tradition, and the people who quietly shape a community. Through Harper’s journey with Archie, readers discover that you don’t have to be the star on the field to matter—every role, every generation, and every story helps build the legacy of a school.

My hope is that this video reminds children, parents, grandparents, alumni, and communities everywhere to preserve their stories, cherish their memories, and remember that you already have a place in the story.

❤️ If it touches your heart, please like, share, and help keep small-town history alive for the next generation.
