Hey everybody,
Sorry for the long period of inactivity on this page, i've been spending an extraordinarily large amount of time out in the mountains! Logged a nice 9 mile hike up, you guessed it, 9 mile on Thursday. (Way up towards Segal Pass) I want to say thanks to everyone that have been telling their friends about NRWS, we have been receiving more calls for classes than ever! It's pretty much been all word of mouth so far as we havn't launched a huge advertising campaign(yet!) I really appreciate the support!

Thanks,
Andrew

Spent 3 nice long days in the mountains in the last week. Saw plenty of deer & elk, a moose, lion & wolf tracks. Hiked in this morning before sun up, was sitting on top of a mountain this morning in the Petty Crk area as the sun came up. An eerie fog rolled in under me through the valley, nothing but the sound of a couple chipmunks and the whoosh of air under some birds wings that flew over me. What a great way to start a day!

If you or someone in your party receive a deep cut or laceration while in the back country, follow these steps to stop the bleeding.
DO IN THIS ORDER UNTIL BLEEDING IS STOPPED:
1- Direct pressure to the wound
Add more gauze/padding as needed
if bleeding persists:
2- Elevate the wound above the heart (if possible)
if bleeding persists:
3- Apply pressure to the appropriate pressure point
(pressure points learned in NRWS course)
if bleeding persists:
4- Tourniquet (LAST RESORT!!!) above or below the joint
This can be made with webbing & a pen/stick/tent stake/etc.

If applying a tourniquet use a wide device (webbing) to prevent cutting into the skin.
Assess and treat for shock.

If you're hiking & realize you're lost, STOP!
S- Stop & gather your bearings
T- Think, where did you get turned around, back track a little?
O- Observe your surroundings, get to higher ground if needed
P- Plan by making educated decisions.

DON"T LOSE YOUR HEAD! Many people have found themselves turned around in the woods & made the situation worse by travelling the wrong direction.

Most wilderness survival experts agree that when lost, stay put & build a fortified shelter, make sure it can be easily recognized from the air. If your situation dictates you travel follow these steps:
1-Make something aircraft can recognize, SOS, HELP, hunters orange hanging from tree branches, etc.
2-Leave a sign to show your direction of travel, sticks or rocks shaped into an arrow.
3-Break sticks, kick down tall grass, break up rotten logs along the way, make sure it's an easy enough path for rescuers to follow!
(don't burn up too many calories leaving a path of destruction!)
During the NRWS course, participants learn the many advantages to the "stay & play" method vs. navigation.

If picking a store bought survival/first aid kit, choose carefully. While they typically have some handy items, NRWS recommends a well prepared hand packed kit. A hand packed kit can be just as small & lightweight as a store bought kit, but much more useful. The NRWS course provides in depth instruction on packing your own emergency kits.
