Cider Pressing Party

Jessica: Las manzanas en Missoula crecieron muy bien este año. El año pasado el árbol de nuestros vecinos no produjo ni una manzana, pero este año había manzanas por todas partes, incluso en nuestro patio trasero. Hacer sidra es el antídoto perfecto para esta circunstancia. También es la actividad idónea para una fiesta porque todo el mundo puede colaborar. Hay que preparar y cortar las manzanas para la prensa, y todo el mundo puede darle unas vueltas a la manivela. Al final, tienes una bebida clásica de otoño.

Rober: The day before the party we went to Jessica’s parents’ to pick apples, plums, and pears, some of these to bake pies for the party. After that, we picked more apples in Jessica’s backyard--we needed a lot of these to press cider the next day. During the party, we met a lot of people, including Marta, a Spaniard from Valladolid who was working in Missoula. We pressed cider and ate some of the soups we had helped Jessie cook in the morning. Margie and others also cooked yummy dishes for the party. It was kind of a potluck.

Drinks and Cocktails
Rober: I was pleasantly surprised that during our stay in Missoula we went to several bars and breweries where they make their own drinks. That’s the case at Montgomery Distillery, where our friend Alicia works. There, they just serve products that they distill, like gin, aquavit, or vodka. I chose a gin & tonic. We also tried more interesting, new stuff for us during our trip, like a “punch,” which was a mixture of drinks (we chose one based on rum and mezcal) that you share with friends, as well as Malort, a bitter liquor from Chicago made of wormwood, that Jessica’s brother, Nate, is a fan of, and also Twisted Tea, a hard iced tea.

Jessica: En los últimos años han abierto unas cuantas destilerías en Missoula, pero la que solemos visitar es Montgomery, porque trabaja allí Alicia, la novia de mi hermano. Ofrecen cócteles conocidos como martini y old fashioned, pero también tienen cócteles originales inspirados en Montana y sus alrededores. El cóctel Greenough Park, se llama así por un parque que también visitamos durante el viaje, y Smoke Tones, me imagino que se llama así por los colores que se forman en el cielo por el humo de los incendios que hay verano.

Rioja is a street located in a neighbourhood called Barrio Gila. Usually, not too many people would go there during the Fiesta de la Vendimia. But the neighbours of that street have managed to see their street and their whole neighbourhood full of people during the grape harvest festival.
A few years ago, they decided to participate in a contest during the festival where people decorate their street, and this is the third consecutive year they’ve won the prize! They also organize all kinds of parties, sometimes just to honor the older people in the street. Other times, in the winter, they collect warm clothing to give away to people who need it.
In addition to the street decorations with this year’s theme, "Alicia in Wineland,” there was a party on Friday. It lasted all day, with food trucks, music, and games for children and adults. Talking to some organizers, they told me that they did It because some older people aren’t able to go to the fair because some of them can't easily walk. I wish all the streets or neighbourhoods had people as nice as those on Rioja Street.

Requena is full of activities and events during the Feria y Fiesta de la Vendimia, which takes place in late August. One that I never want to miss is , a four-day fair where you can taste wines from 23 local wineries.
It’s held at the fairgrounds, and Diana and I went on Friday with our moms. We shared a number of wines, starting with whites, and ending with bobal red wine, which is indigenous to Requena-Utiel. In between, there were rosés and cava, the Spanish version of champagne. Everything was paired with tapas and “bollo de Requena.” By lucky accident, we bought more tickets than we could use in one day, so we all had to come back on Saturday to drink the remaining glasses!

Recuerdo una tarde, hace muchos años, cuando Jacob y yo empezábamos a conocernos. Compramos una tarta de chocolate y fuimos al parque Sacajawea a comérnosla y leer libros de la biblioteca. Actualmente camino por allí varias veces a la semana. Solo es un parque de barrio, con una zona infantil, merenderos, y mucho espacio para que los perros y los niños puedan correr. De todas maneras, es un parque normal. Me gusta tener este recuerdo porque en esa época no teníamos ningún plan de futuro, ni siquiera volver a Missoula y vivir precisamente en este mismo barrio.

There are at least a couple of possible solutions if a door rubs against the floor tiles. One of them is to sand the part of the door that is rubbing. Fortunately, there is another one solution that’s a little less aggressive, and you don’t even need to be too handy!
With the passage of time, and due to continued use, the door hinges had worn out. Looking for washers to lift up the door a little bit, I found out that there is a type of spring washer that is used to solve precisely this problem. You just need to have enough gap on the top, in between the door and the frame. In this case, it worked perfectly!

Puede ser interesante asistir al mismo festival dos años consecutivos. El año pasado, en el Mountain Dance Fest, me sentí más insegura bailando. Desde que me mudé de San Francisco a Missoula, ya no había tomado clases regularmente y no me sentía lo suficiente en forma para bailar durante cinco días seguidos. El festival fue divertido, y claro que aprendí cosas que podía poner en práctica, pero terminé con la sensación de no poder entrenar como antes.

Un año más tarde estoy en un sitio muy diferente con respecto a mi relación con el baile. He empezado a dar mis propias clases, y a pasar tiempo sola en el estudio. Además, he visto que hay otra manera de avanzar en la práctica, aunque no exista la variedad de clases que había en San Francisco. Es algo que ya sabía en teoría, pero no había encontrado la rutina ni la disciplina de seguir con ella. Esta actitud relajada me ha permitido fijarme más en las relaciones con otros bailarines. Estoy disfrutando del grupo y de la gente de una manera que no había visto desde la universidad.

Last Saturday was a fun day. I went with my bandmates to attend and perform at the Rabolagartija Festival . It’s a relatively new and awesome festival where you can enjoy the shows of several artists from a broad range of musical genres.
We arrived in Villena around 7 p.m, just as the fun Argentine band, Los Caligaris were playing on one of the main stages. We were able to see a number of interesting bands, like La M.O.D.A., which combines folk, rock and punk rhythms, playing unique instruments like the banjo, mandolin, and accordion. After seeing Rozalen, one of the coolest current Spanish vocalists, we, Gypsy y los Gatos Rumberos , headed backstage to be ready to perform at 1:50 a.m!
