Do you support unions but want to know more about how they operate and how to form one? If so, then the Union 101 workshop is for you. This interactive workshop introduces participants to what a union is and does. Training will include a brief overview of the National Labor Relations Act, collective bargaining and organizing. This workshop is brought to you by union members of the Montana Democratic Socialists of America (MT DSA) Labor Working Group. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Come socialize with socialists every other Monday at 6pm! These gatherings are a low key way to dip your toes into the socialist water by getting to know some of our chapter’s membership, asking questions, and engaging in rich discussion about how we can create a better world together. Whether you’re familiar with the DSA as an org or you’ve just had enough with corporate politics on both sides of the aisle and feel like there has to be a better way, come hang!

We’re thrilled to be hosting this presentation by Kristen Jordan, Missoula City Councilor and Western Montana DSA member! Kristen has run multiple successful political campaigns and has years of experience navigating the ins and outs of serving in local public office. During this presentation she hopes to not only encourage people like YOU to run for office, but to show that winning is a realistic goal someone like YOU can achieve.

Local elections are where your vote is most impactful and the changes we make as socialists in office can provide immediate and tangible benefits to our community. If you have ideas about how we could improve Missoula, if you’ve ever wanted to make a difference in your community, and if you are tired of being represented by people who don’t have you and your neighbors’ best interests at heart, THIS IS THE EVENT FOR YOU!

We’re having a yard sale! Help us raise funds for the chapter so that we can continue hosting educational and community solidarity events like our Socialist Speaker and Book Club Series and upcoming music shows to build class consciousness and progress the people’s movement.

Voice of the People: Radio by and for the 99%
Linda Gillison, Soundman Jim and Mark take a look at our Word of the Week: “Federated Civic Democracy.” We will discuss what this means as an antidote to authoritarian government and the surveillance state. Next, we will hear an interview of Lea Bossler who has uncovered possible illegalities in the independent campaigns for Montana’s US Senator and Eastern District US House seats. Next, we hear from Lucas Moody with his Missoula City Council Report. We dive into recent developments of the use of Automatic Intelligence (AI) by the US “War Department” for war and for potential domestic surveillance. Then we have an opinion piece by Robbie Liben about AI and hyper data centers. We also look at government surveillance of unions and civic groups in Minnesota in their anti-ICE activities late last year. Finally, we cover two stories about the increase of union members in the US and an initiative in New York City by Mayor Mamdani to support worker organizing.

On September 13th, Missoula organizations are teaming up to host a solidarity school: organizer training designed to help people in our community build the skills needed to organize our workplaces and neighborhoods, defend each other’s rights, demand what we deserve, and stand up to the billionaire agenda together.

Lunch and drinks are provided free of charge, but donations are accepted.

Callais gutted the Voting Rights Act overnight, and state legislatures across the South are redrawing Jim Crow style maps to erase Black representation. ICE agents have killed people on their way to work in cities across the country. Medicaid, SNAP, and Social Security are being cut while billionaires get another tax break. None of this is random. It is a system built to keep working people from voting them out in the midterms, organize against them, or hold them accountable. They’re not waiting for November. We are not waiting to be ready either.

Solidarity Schools are one or two-day organizing trainings aimed at bringing together labor and community organizers to rise to this moment — moving from analysis to disciplined, collective nonviolent action. Together, we’ll build the unity, skill, and courage to act in coordinated and powerful ways, preparing to confront authoritarianism, challenge inequality, and grow the organized people power needed to win lasting change. Voice of the People: Radio by and for the 99%

Lucas Moody, Soundman Jim and Mark explore Our Word of the Week: “Labor Unions’ Purpose.” We will discuss the various purposes ascribed to unions on this Labor Day. We will then hear an interview of Anna Steitz and Keith Suta, who represent Missoula’s DFTBA Workers Union, on the organizing of their independent union and the long-slog negotiating that resulted in their first collective bargaining agreement. Then we turn to an upcoming Solidarity School sponsored by Missoula organizations of the national May Day Strong coalition. Then we update a recent story on parents organizing to maintain the perinatal intensive care unit at Missoula’s for-profit Community Hospital. Next, we hear from Lucas with his Missoula City Council Report. Then we turn to Andy Boyd who talks about his article “The Funk Strategy: How Outside Cash Tried to Engineer Montana's Senate Race, and Failed.”
