For storytime, we read the book “Even Superheroes Have Bad Days” by Shelly Becker. All kids have trouble getting a grip on their emotions, sometimes—even young superheroes! But what do they do when they’re having a bad day? Colorful action-packed illustrations and a dynamite rhyming text reveal the many ways superheroes (and ordinary children, too) can resist the super-temptation to cause a scene when they’re sad, mad, frustrated, lonely, or afraid. From burning off steam on a bike or a hike, to helping others, this energetic picture book has plenty of fun ideas to help kids cope when they’re feeling overwhelmed.

For our literacy activity, I encouraged the children to select a pair of superhero glasses or face mask to wear. I invited them to turn over a card and identify the letter and say it’s sound. Then, take a scrap piece of paper, find the letter on the poster and cover it with the scrap paper. We played until all the letters were covered.

For our math activity, I invited the children to put on a disguise and search for colored links that I hid. Then, sort the links by color. To make it more difficult, I included links of different sizes and had them sort by size.

Today we learned about superhero glasses and for our creative activity, we created super vision. I invited the children to color their paddles, glue the cellophane to the inside of the paddle and fold it to secure it. I then encouraged the children to look at the test pattern cards through the paddles and discuss how the pictures change. Without the paddle, it’s a mix of colors and shapes, but with the paddle, it’s a dog, cat, and bird.

For storytime, we read the book “Meet the Super Shapes” by Chris Lensch. This story is about shapes with superpowers which fits perfectly with this month’s theme. We will read this story several times to build vocabulary and narrative comprehension.

For our math activity, we began by clipping a paper clip to each shape, then securing a magnet to a craft stick. I encouraged a child to touch the “magic wand” to a shape and lift it up. (The excitement on their face when it actually worked was adorable.) They then put their shape on the matching shape on the puzzle. 😊

For our literacy activity, I first invited the children to find superheroes on the theme poster. I then encouraged the children to write the word “super” on their name tags. I then spread the name tags around the room and invited each child to pretend to “fly” (jump) over their name.

Yesterday we started our superhero theme learning about superhero symbols. I started by cutting out a shield shape and drawing the first letter of their name. I invited the children to decorate their shield with crayons. We then taped a paper strip loop on the back to create a handle. As you can see, the children had fun striking a pose. 😍

This month is all about Superheroes, so of course I had to purchase more superhero costumes. To say the kids were excited would be an understatement. 😍
