Ma's Nature Walks

Ma's Nature Walks Nature facts * Stewardship * Inclusiveness * Come walk with me! I'm a mom now to a girl who also loves being outside. Together, we explore our world.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of spending time in the woods, hunting for fossils in upstate New York, or hiding in a tree, lost in a book. Here, I share some of what we've found, what I've learned about our world, and tips on how to explore safely. You'll find short videos, links to articles, infographics, and a personal story here and there. Come walk with me!

I'm pretty tired of all the food policing on social media, and just in general.
Unless you harvest your food yourself, it's processed in some shape or form to get to your place. And additives aren't necessarily bad, depending on what they are.
If your body can't digest certain "healthy" foods, then they're not healthy for you.
*If done correctly* certain diets can work out for you. I'm thinking vegan and vegetarian, here. No amount of testimonials will convince me carnivore is healthy, especially in the long-term. (Study up on how kidney stones are formed for an example.)
I am working on getting more plant-based, but the way my body operates makes that complicated. That means I still need animal proteins to get my body what it needs.
You do you, of course, but use caution when looking at influencers, especially when they're selling supplements.

Hair chalk, backwards shirt (she dressed herself), and rainboots trying to catch fish with her little net. 💙
She didn't get any, but she had fun trying.

Monarchs are about ready to start their big migration down to Mexico, so this chonker is probably now a butterfly in the wild somewhere.
Anyway, caterpillars in general are so cool. They practice how they hang before becoming cuccoons.
They then liquify before reforming into a butterfly.
Kinda puts a body horror spin on the whole narrative of transforming into something beautiful.

You know you're a nature nerd when you're woken up in the middle of a dream about identifying a random stranger's rock collection and try going back to sleep because you want to see the rest of their collection.

I couldn't get this phrase out of my head the last time I visited the Mississippi. 😆

A N yhoo, rifles happen when shallow water in a river goes over small rocks. This stirring introduces more oxygen into the water, and small animals have more success living amongst them.
This was taken at the Gateway Mississippi Regional Park in Minnesota. This area had lots of crayfish, small fish, and the teensy critters they fed on.
BYW - Minnesota does have native crayfish, but the invasive rusty back crayfish are also in our waterways.
That said, I don't yet know how to tell them apart, as my only experiences with them are seeing them that day and getting the class crayfish when I was a kid, naming her Electra, and losing her when she somehow escaped her enclosure.
Apparently, crayfish are also tasty, but since I have a shellfish allergy, I won't be risking a reaction for a taste.

I need a vacation and some magical cures for health issues.

Frog Watch problems, amiright?
I did hear a few green frogs still trying their luck, though.

I got this idea from another mom who has neirospicy kids too young to read yet.
This will hopefully help her get an idea of the day in the morning, so she can be at least semi-prepared.
The morning and evening schedules are both new and printed out mostly for me when my executive function is on vacation, but the structure helps her, too.
She still struggles with unexpected change, so that sheet from preschool is still very useful.
I'm obviously knocking out my organizational to-dos now that I'm feeling mostly ok.
