Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov (1960- ) is one of our Central and South American composers featured in our 2022 study guide. He has won two Grammys, and has been awarded both the Guggenheim Fellowship and MacArthur Fellowship for his compositional skill. Golijov has also been a composer in residence at music festivals and with major professional orchestras around the world.

Next weekend, September 10/11, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is featuring Golijov's "Last Round" (1996) on their season's opening concert. His compositional style feeds on influence from other styles, eras, and composers, fusing their technique and sound with his own unique voice. On his piece "Last Round", Golijov says, "I composed "Last Round" as an imaginary chance for Piazzola's spirit to fight one more time. [...] Two quartets confront each other, separated by the focal bass, with violins and violas standing up as in the traditional tango orchestras. The bows fly in the air as inverted legs in cris-crossed choreography, always attracting and repelling each other, always in danger of clashing, always avoiding it with the immutability that can only be acquired by transforming hot passion into pure pattern."

Even though "Last Round" isn't the piece featured in our 2022 guide, this is a great chance for any teams interested in the 2022 contest to get familiar with his work, his voice, and the textures he creates, all while supporting local musicians. Get out there and LISTEN!
