Applications for the AIA Emerging Leaders in Architecture - Class of 2024 are open!

ELA is an intensive program of educational sessions structured around presentations, discussions, and case study activities over the course of a year by a small cadre of participants.

⭐️ Participants are selected for their potential to be outstanding contributors to the profession and the community.

Facilitators and mentors include established leaders in the building, finance, non-profit, development, university, legal, consulting, and design professions and in the community at large.

These leaders develop and deliver sessions, designed to provide participants with skills related to areas of leadership and practice.

🌆 The class project for 2024 will be in Northern Virginia, so many sessions and the project work days will be located in the Northern Virginia area!

A lesson in group site visits 🙌

As part of the Emerging Leaders in Architecture () program, Caitlin toured the Elizabeth River Project - Ryan Resilience Lab in Norfolk, VA!

This resiliency lab has been researched, designed, and constructed to serve as a model for what resilient design and adaptation can look like as we face climate change.

Looking over the second level terrace, it’s clear to see how close surrounding homes are to Knitting Mill Creek. This lab was “Engineered to Withstand Flooding and Respond to Sea Level Rise” (ElizabethRiver.org) and inform the impacted communities of strategies to adapt.

“I was HUMBLED (to say the least) by the true and immediate impact that rising sea levels are having on our coasts. Not something I would see in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

However, I am incredibly grateful for these opportunities to tour construction sites and see these innovative designs up close.

Let this serve as a reminder to take EVERY opportunity to get out of the office to experience a new region and learn about evolving building methods.” -Caitlin
