Convicted of mail fraud, he was sentenced to five years in prison—a sentence later commuted by President Coolidge—but he was ultimately deported. For those who continue to stand for the liberation of Black people, let this pardon serve as a sign to press forward. My hope is that it won’t take another hundred years for us to acknowledge how systems and media have long worked to diminish Black leaders.
