Quick Reminder for Dementia Caregivers 🧠

Patience and flexibility are key. A person with dementia may feel confused or frustrated—meet them where they are, not where you want them to be. 💙

Small moments of understanding can make a big difference.

⭐This week's spotlight shines on Sharon Jackson, one of our Global Professional Instructors. ⭐

❔We asked Sharon, "What strategies can caregivers use to foster meaningful connections with individuals in advanced stages of dementia?"

Here’s what she had to say:

Care partners may feel uncomfortable once someone begins to lose the ability to communicate verbally because they just do not know what to say or how to connect. If this resonates with you, I have a few tips that I hope can help.

⭐Pay Attention to Body Language
If the individual is tense, scared, bored, relaxed etc. their body language tells you this and can be validated and addressed accordingly.

⭐Eye Contact
Similar to body language, watch their eyes and facial expressions for reactions of understanding, comfort, uncertainty etc. Always get in their line of vision and gain eye contact before interacting and watch for changes as you proceed.

⭐Preferred Name
Call them by their preferred name initially and throughout the interaction. This may keep their attention and foster feelings of safety. Make sure you use their preferred name for their current reality. If you called me “Mrs. Jackson” and my short-term memory was impaired, I may not recall the time in my life when I was married and therefore may not respond.

⭐Tone of Voice
A higher pitch/tone can trigger alertness and may gain attention or awaken someone who may be bored. A lower pitch/tone can create feelings of calm/relaxation.

⭐Beloved Long-Term Memories
If the person in care loves the ocean, take 5 minutes in a 1:1 engagement, turn on wave sounds, show images of beautiful beaches and waters, use coconut-scented lotion, and share a story you learned about the individual’s travels to different beaches.

Creating meaningful connections can bring joy and comfort at any stage of dementia.

⭐This week's spotlight shines on Sharon Host, who recently retired as one of our Global Professional Instructors. ⭐

♥️ She shares her final Dementia Care Insight, "Reflections of My Time at Dementia Care Specialists."

Here’s what she had to say:

I wanted to reflect on my time at DCS and how it has impacted my life.

Dementia Care Specialists is a special company because it was founded by someone who has walked the walk and talked the talk in memory care. For me, that meant the company was designed to be mission driven, which was important because it aligned with my purpose in life, meaning it was the perfect fit for me.

Joining DCS was a great start to the sunset part of my career as an occupational therapist focused on cognitive impairment. I want to share with you some of my learnings and loves of working for DCS:

☑️Being able to devote my time and talent to dementia care was like a kid getting to live at a fun playground, every-single-day!
☑️I love the “ah-ha” moment when someone I was teaching/coaching realized using the approaches we teach really work
☑️I love that it’s okay to dance with people with dementia during the workday and to give care partners permission to do the same
☑️Life is never so busy that I can’t stop and help a person living with dementia who may be struggling to get through an activity
☑️Caregivers need our support and time just as much as the person living with dementia
☑️WE are the ones who can make living with dementia fun so what’s stopping us?
☑️Helping even one person living with dementia and/or their caregiver is important and makes a difference in the world
☑️Being part of a team of caring people (like my DCS team) CAN change the world, one person at a time for the better

So, as the sun sets on my time at DCS and rises on my new season called retirement, I hope these learnings and loves will filter into your life as well. Much love and thanks to my team for nearly 13 wonderful years of working together to make the world a better place for everyone, especially people living with dementia.
