📢 Plenary Session at IHPST 2026 📢

We are pleased to announce a Plenary Session at IHPST 2026, presented by Carlos Fiolhais from the Centre for Physics of the University of Coimbra and Gilberto Pereira from the Centre for Physics and the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra (Portugal).

Theme: History of Physics at the University of Coimbra: A Notable Collection of Instruments

During the second half of the 18th century, there was remarkable cultural and scientific activity in Portugal. Notable events include the founding of the Royal College of Nobles in Lisbon (1761), the reform of the University of Coimbra (1772), and the founding of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (1779) – events that had parallels with similar ones in several European countries. The first two were spearheaded by the Marquis of Pombal, the powerful minister of King D. José I. These events, which are fundamental importance to the history of Portuguese education, must therefore be framed within the European context of the time, representing the acceptance, in our country, of the pedagogical reorientation within the framework of Enlightenment reforms. The great pedagogical innovation of the 18th century was the official introduction of the experimental method in science education. In this context, Physics occupied a prominent place.

In this presentation, Carlos Fiolhais and Gilberto Pereira will discuss the history of the Physics Cabinet at the University of Coimbra, with an emphasis on its instruments. This space has undergone several vicissitudes over its 250 years, but it has reached its current state, integrated into the University of Coimbra's Science Museum.

📢 Springer Lecture at IHPST 2026 📢

We are pleased to announce the Springer Lecture at IHPST 2026, presented by Falk Riess and Wolfgang Engels from the HistEx, University of Oldenburg (Germany).

Theme: Electric Images - Artistic Procedures and Scientific Communication: From Epistemic Things to Technical Objects

This communication examines Lichtenberg figures as epistemic images at the intersection of experimental physics, media history, and artistic practice in the late eighteenth century. Discovered by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799), these figures emerged when electrical charges were applied to insulating resin surfaces, on which the charge could not dissipate. The discharge thus became effectively “frozen” on a resin cake and electrostatically attracted dust that arranged itself into characteristic patterns. While this process rendered invisible electrical phenomena visible, the figures remained extremely fragile, ephemeral, and inseparable from
their material substrate. This posed a central problem for scientific communication: how could such phenomena be fixed, disseminated, and compared in an era preceding photography?

Such reenactments reconstruct the practical conditions under which knowledge was produced. Based on historical sources, reconstructed apparatuses, and comparable materials, similar “electrical paintings” were recreated; a live demonstration of the experiment forms part of the presentation. The case illustrates how artistic techniques functioned as crucial media of scientific communication prior to the advent of photography.
