We are thrilled to officially introduce Mr. Sandoval, our Student Engagement Specialist, working at The Cottage Collective!

From Mr. Sandoval:

My goal is simple: to support students and families, build meaningful relationships, and help connect people with the resources they need to be successful. Through The Cottage, I’ll help provide access to clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, community resources, and other support for students and families who may need a little extra support.

Before stepping into this role, I spent 5 years as a Restorative Practice Coordinator at Kennedy High School, where I worked closely with students, families, and staff to build relationships, strengthen school culture, and help students stay connected to school.

I also spent 2 years as a Family Engagement Liaison at Moore Middle School, helping strengthen relationships between families, schools, and community resources while supporting students and families however I could.

Outside of my work with The Cottage, I’m currently the Girls Wrestling Coach at Roosevelt High School. Coaching and working with young people is something I’m extremely passionate about, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to continue making an impact on students both in and outside of the classroom.

When I’m not working or coaching, you’ll usually find me spending time with my wife, Amy, and our wonderful 10-month-old son, Axel.

I’m excited to get to know more of our students, families, businesses, organizations, and community members. I truly believe that when a community comes together to support its students, incredible things can happen.

We will have a Bundle up Bash on Saturday, September 19 from 9a-1p. Swap out your winter clothing! We will have gently used winter coats and snow boots out, while supplies last.

Mr. Sandoval would love to host volunteers any time The Cottage is open! Stop on by for however much time you have to give, and help sort and hang clothing, organize, learn basic retail skills, and get your community service hours signed off.

As a general reminder, we are a dry building, so we do not have restrooms or water on site. Volunteers are encouraged to bring small snacks and drinks as needed.

July was an incredible month for The Cottage!

We nearly doubled our number of visitors compared to June and reached new personal bests for both the number of visitors served and the number of household members impacted. Thank you to everyone who has supported this project—we couldn't do it without you!

A special shoutout goes to some amazing members of our food services team, who volunteered more than 40 hours of their own time reorganizing and cleaning to prepare for last Saturday's event. It was a tremendous undertaking, and their dedication made a huge difference. They already work tirelessly to feed our students during the school year, and they continue to serve our community even during their well-earned breaks.

We also want to recognize Mr. P. for everything he has done to help grow The Cottage over the past several months. His hard work and commitment have been instrumental in getting us to where we are today. While you'll still see him around MIS this school year, we'll be welcoming a new face to The Cottage. Mr. Sandoval will take over as our Student Engagement Specialist as we return to full-time hours. If you attended Saturday's event, you may have already had the chance to meet him. Stay tuned, we'll be introducing him more formally soon!

Our Launch is almost here! We can't wait to see our students and families this Saturday, August 1, from 10am-1pm.

Highlights include:
-300 backpacks to giveaway (Thank you to Scheels!)
- Lions Club will provide vision screenings
- Johnstown Pediatric Dentistry will provide dental screenings
- Connected Chiropractic is offering sports physicals for $55 cash/check/credit card
- The Weld Food Bank mobile food truck will be onsite with free food
- We will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers hot off the grill
- Come visit with lots of local partners for information and small giveaways
- Paradice Cream of Milliken will be available for purchase

The Cottage Collective will be open:
- Hygiene supplies will be available for students in Weld RE-5J
- Pick out new-to-you outfits before school starts
- Size up in a winter coat or snow boots after that summer growth spurt
- Pick out books, movies and toys to take home
- We have chicken available again! We kindly request a limit of two packages of chicken per household.

The Milliken Library will be open:
- Our youngest learners can flex their imaginations with Stay & Play
- Hands on crafts will be available
- Take a tour if you haven't been in yet
- Sign up for a library card, check out available resources, and help us celebrate this amazing expansion of library offerings

Due to the nature of the event, we do ask that you avoid bringing in donations on Saturday. We anticipate a very busy day with heavy foot traffic and minimal available space. We will happily take your donations another time!
- The Lions Club will accept donations of used glasses, and we will have a box available moving forward. If you've recently outgrown a pair or changed prescriptions, feel free to drop off your old pair!

We are just over a week away from OuR Launch, our district-wide, back to school kickoff event!

We hope to see you at 10am on Saturday, August 1 at Milliken Intermediate School. We will have free backpacks, giveaways, lunch, The Weld Food Bank's mobile food truck, and so much more. The Cottage Collective will be open, so come stock up on supplies, new outfits for school, and anything else that you can use.

Our first six months have been an incredible success, and we couldn't have done it without you!

A heartfelt thank you to every individual, family, and organization that has supported us along the way. Your encouragement, partnership, and trust have made these first six months truly unforgettable.

Johnstown and Milliken are amazing communities, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve and support the people who make them so special. Here's to everything we've accomplished together—and to many more milestones ahead!
