What nobody tells you about recovering from a layoff

After a layoff, people are usually generous. They send job openings, they check in, they tell you to stay positive. What almost nobody offers is a process for getting back up. There's plenty of advice about the destination and almost none about the middle, and the middle is where people struggle most.

Laid off 3 times. Here's what I learned

I've been laid off three times now, and every time, the same lesson comes back.

When you lose your job, you find out very quickly who really had your back. Very few people from the company I worked for reached out to ask if I was okay. The people who did check in, without any agenda, showed me which relationships were strong and which were just convenient. As a petroleum engineer with more than 10 years in oil and gas, I've learned to pay close attention to that difference.

Have you ever been surprised by who reached out after a tough career moment?

I've been laid off at the very start of my career and again later on, and the second time felt completely different. Early on, I put work above everything and worked countless hours. Now I have a husband, cats, family and priorities that matter more than any title. If you're facing a layoff in oil and gas or any industry, remember your life is bigger than your job.

The lie about layoffs and seniority

Getting laid off at year one is brutal. Getting laid off at year ten is brutal too. That is the part nobody says out loud, because we all assume experience is supposed to cushion the blow.
If you have been laid off recently, the thing to know is that the pain you are feeling is not a sign you were unprepared or not senior enough. It hits everyone the same way.

What does oil and gas actually have to do with everyday life?

In this beginner-friendly breakdown, Yoshi explains why understanding the oil and gas industry matters, even for professionals working in clean energy who may have mostly heard negative narratives about the industry.

Oil and gas goes far beyond gasoline and transportation. It plays a major role in energy, manufacturing, heating, plastics, clothing, and many of the products used in everyday life. The industry also has a major influence on jobs, economic growth, global energy markets, and geopolitics.

From Brent and WTI crude prices to global conflicts and energy demand, oil and gas continues to influence the world around us.

This is Oil & Gas for Dummies a simple introduction designed to give you a broader perspective on an industry that touches nearly every part of modern life.

Mistakes I made in Oil and Gas Industry - Part 2

One of the biggest mistakes early in a career can be underestimating the power of relationships.

In the oil and gas industry, technical skills and merit matter—but so does how you build and maintain relationships with the people around you. Your colleagues, mentors, managers, industry peers, and professional network can all play an important role in shaping your career opportunities and experiences.

Yoshi shares a lesson she learned early in her oil and gas career: not every relationship should be transactional.

If every interaction is approached with the mindset of “What can this person do for me?”, it can damage trust and make relationships feel purely business-driven. Building genuine connections, showing interest in people, and adding a human element to professional relationships is a valuable life and career skill.

Whether you're a petroleum engineer, a recent graduate, or simply starting your career, learning to build authentic professional relationships can be just as important as developing your technical expertise.
