Modeled after Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York, Humans of Vermont collects quotes and stories from residents all around Vermont in order to provide a glimpse into the incredible and unique lives of strangers across the state. Humans of Vermont was founded by three college students who wanted to explore Vermont past their own Green Mountain communities. Through our work, we hope to highlight an

array of stories and portray the vibrancy of Vermont, while bringing seemingly different people a little closer together.

"I grew up on an island with no other children on it except my older sister. It was during the war; the best thing I remember about the war was we had black out curtains and Dad used to show movies. That was a big thing–– pull the black out curtain so you could show movies on them, although the real reason was submarines were creeping around."

"I think the nicest time in my life so far, though all have been great, would have been living in Philadelphia when I was in my 40s. All my children were still at home. I was married. I lived in a beautiful stone house right by the woods, and I would go to work in a hospital by riding my bicycle from my house through the woods there. And that is what I have often thought about as the best time of my life...Then my wife got cancer and died, and seven months later I had an accident in St. Johns, in the Virgin Islands, and ended up in the wheelchair. So following the best was the worst. But they kind of evened out...I would say life, it evens out. It’s wonderful whatever it is."

"Flexibility is definitely something I’ve learned from my preschoolers. You can go into something and say 'Oh, I want to teach you all of these facts and all of these things!' And then all of a sudden you have an audience of two year olds... Does this brown cow make brown milk? No, it’s going to make white milk. Every time!"

A conversation and a self-portrait from a 6 year old Vermonter:

"Have you seen Mary Poppins, the play?
"No, have you?"
"Yes. I hated it!"
"Why?"
"Because it's long...and I'm little...what does it feel like to be old?"

"I came up to Vermont with my wife to pick apples and we never left."

"An old Vermonter used to sit on a porch across the road and used to play his violin. And he lived with his friend down there in that broken down house. Which has always been broken down, it has never been anything different. They didn’t have any running water, they had electricity. They got all their water from the river. They washed themselves from the river and he was just a cool guy, you know? Like I said he played a beautiful violin."

What was your relationship with your mother like when you were young?

"She was diagnosed with a terminal illness and then ended up living for twelve years so that made for a pretty special twelve years. So, you know, I think that we probably acknowledged our mother a lot differently at that age than most kids that age acknowledge their mother because we were thankful that she was still there."

"We were tired of living around a city and all that bu****it in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I worked for a bank, and we thought we wanted something different. We just happened to find a little country store. It really worked out for us, though it didn’t work out for everybody who made jumps like that. We just thought we would escape from the regular rat race. And if I had to do it again, I would totally do it again."

Do you have a favorite memory being together as kids here?

"Skiing at the Snow Bowl at 45 below, with a wind chill factor. And this guy takes me down the hardest hill and I nearly froze my fingers off—"

"And it was horrible! Was it a good memory?
It was a memory! A very vivid memory."

"Those things do bring you closer."

"Yup. If you survive."

"In order to be a chef, you know, you have to be able to have a passion for it. If you don’t have a passion for it, you’re not going to like what you do. And we all here have a passion for it. That’s why we are here today."

"As a parent, my daughter came first, and then the store, the animals, home– I was on the bottom. I wasn’t even on the scale sometimes. I kind of put myself first now, or maybe I don’t. People would say that I don’t. Okay, I guess I don’t put myself first. But I think I’m higher on that scale. I try to get out every day and I walk the dogs. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful, the dogs are having a good time. It was snowing yesterday and I thought, 'Oh my God, what a gift.' You know if you’re stressed out, to just look at that. I do some yoga, like for five minutes. And that’s taking care of myself!"
