💧 This week at Amy’s Backyard Farm, we’ve been learning how water supports an entire ecosystem, and how everything we do on the land can eventually make its way into our waterways.
We “followed raindrops” down to Pargey Creek, a little tributary of the Delaware River, reading the land to figure out where water travels from the highest point on our property. Along the way, we talked about how chemicals, fertilizer, and trash from lawns, farms, and streets can travel through our waterways and eventually make their way all the way to the ocean.
The kids engineered their own dams and got to see firsthand just how much power water can have. They tested different substrates and discovered that covering soil helps it hold onto more water instead of letting it run off — something we put into practice here on the farm.
Our Nature Builders also finished dismantling the garden this week, making room for what will become our own wildlife pond — another way to slow and hold water on the property while creating habitat for local wildlife. 🐸🌿
And while digging a pond by hand would be…a LOT for little hands 😂, we were fortunate enough to connect with some wonderful people in our local community at Lucky Farms LLC who are going to help us with the excavation. I absolutely adore the community we are building around this little farm. ❤️
