Many thanks to the community, GiveMiami, and the Miami Foundation for the outpouring of love in our neighborhood. People helping people. Call me a “Pollyanna” if you like (Google Disney, young’ns), but on this cool, cloudless, glorious Friday I am feeling major GiveMiami love is moving our city in the right direction.

Give Miami Day brings you the direct opportunity to support the organizations that make you shine.
Extra Virgin Press is keeping letterpress printing alive in Miami with two 70 year old presses, lots of ink, and paper.
Trade in your screens for a moment and print something that you believe in.
Make Miami yours, lifting up the organizations that tell your story on GiveMiami Day!
Prints, posters, books.... no batteries required. Thank you!

Bringing letterpress to the young ones and the "nice kids my age" who are making books requires me to also learn. I spent three days with some of the best at the Hamilton Wayzgoose last weekend.
Bringing that knowledge back to share as well.

Bookleggers Library gives books away. They are a favorite place not just for books, but they are housed in Bakehouse Art Center, one of largest and oldest Arts organizations in Miami. Mark Russell and his wife live nearby. Mark teaches across the street at a middle school and has a studio at the Bakehouse.

I brought dozens of students to print at the Book Fair over the years I was teaching. It is arguably the best fest in the city.
Words and image on paper are compelling. No batteries required.

Aside from my two antiques (a 1949 Vandercook 4 Proof press and Challenge 15KP Proof press) most of what I use is ink, paper, and things to clean the press. Old school printing takes time, but it rewards those who are patient, take good care of their equipment, and clean up promptly & thouroughly. My days often are simply print and make a mess... Clean everything up and put everything away again. It works.

When Extra Virgin Press was officially formed in 2016, I thought I was an army of one. Almost a decade later, it seems to be an extension of teaching in Public School.
I work with a group of people, young and old, pointed at values I grew up with in the Midwest.
This year as GiveMiami Day approaches I recognize that everyone whose voice was lifted with ink on paper is part of Extra Virgin Press.
Printing is Power. Support to Organizations during this week of giving empowers kids, my favored nation.
I will be donating to groups who lift their voices. Consider giving on GiveMiami Day. Look through the website.
Find a group, or three and raise their voices.
While I was a teacher, I left each summer to attend classes and artists residencies.
I longed to engage and build that community at home. Now I teach kids and "nice kids my age" in Miami.
Support your chosen tribes. I vote for kids.
I print for Miami.
