Patricia Stephens Due was a civil rights activist from Quincy, Florida that attended and graduated from FAMU. Patricia had been challenging segregationist laws since a young age. At the age of 13 years old (1953), she and her sister stood in the “whites only” line at their local Dairy Queen. Stephens started school at FAMU in the fall of 1957. In 1967 she married John D. Due, Jr. a FAMU Law student who went on to be a prominent civil rights attorney.

In 1964 Due became the field secretary for CORE in their first voter education and registration project in North Florida. Her involvement in this project registered more Black people in north Florida than any other region in the state.

While in college Due remained active with marches, boycotts, and sit-ins. She was even suspended several times for her social political activism. She was so active and dedicated to the black freedom struggle that she did not receive her degree until 1967; 10 years after she started in 1957.

Before her death in 2012, Mrs. Due used to give presentations, speeches, enactments, and workshops on the civil rights movement to the younger generation of schools, churches, and other organizations to inspire them to walk in her footsteps. She also co-authored a book with her daughter Tananarive Due called Freedom in the family: A Mother-Daughter Memoir of the Fight for Civil Rights. The book makes detailed accounts of the consequences and sacrifices her family and other families had to make and what it really like to have parents that are social/political activists.

Due was the recipient of the Ghandi Award for Outstanding Work in Human Relations from FAMU and NAACP Florida, and the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Outstanding Leadership. She was also awarded an honorary doctorate degree from her alma mater, FAMU.

The first racially integrated collegiate football game was played by FAMU and the University of Tampa on November 29, 1969, at the Tampa stadium. Our head coach, Jake Gaither, was advocating on the team's behalf for this game to happen. There was a lot of talk in the media about this game; it was highly anticipated. The fans were not only divided by schools but also race. There was talk of a riot due to the strong feelings on both sides. Fortunately, nothing like this happened.

The Rattlers emerged victorious 34-28 in the historic game that helped debunk several long-standing racial myths about black athletes, black coaches, and race relations between Florida's segregated populations. Coach Gaither retired just one game after this after defeating Grambling University. When asked about his career's biggest game, he said his defeat over the University of Tampa over his six Black College Football Championship wins.

Alonzo S. Gaither, who built a powerful athletic machine at Florida A&M University, the state's only public historically black university, is known as the winningest coach of his era. His pioneering coaching tactics propelled FAMU's athletic program beyond the parameters of the HBCU universe into the broader American culture, with the team's stellar performance being covered on sports pages of daily mainstream and black niche newspapers across the country. Coach Gaither is historically regarded as a great motivator who used the football field as his "laboratory" to develop players' character and refine their talents to help them reach their fullest life potential.

Recognize this building? 👀

FAMU Black History Fact: In the early 1900s, FAMU had a hospital on its campus. FAMU's hospital was the only one that treated African Americans in North Florida and maintained that distinction through the 1950s. Built-in 1920 for the city's black population, the FAMU hospital was more than just a healthcare provider - it was the center of a community.

The hospital closed due to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the federal government's threat to withhold Medicare funding from both the FAMU hospital and Tallahassee Memorial Hospital if racial segregation continued. Tallahassee Memorial started admitting black patients, federal and state funding that previously supported the FAMU Hospital, and transferred to Tallahassee Memorial.

State funding ended in 1967
Changed the name to Tallahassee A&M Hospital
Leased to the city and county from 1967 to 1970
Renewed for 1970-72

On December 24, 1971, citing unsustainable losses, the Hospital Board announced that it was closing down the hospital, which had three patients housed there.

FAMU President Dr. B. L. Perry, Jr. cited "the unwillingness of white doctors to commit patients to it, the unavailability of black doctors in this community, low salary for nurses. As was typical of racial desegregation in the U.S., the black facility closed, and the employees lost their jobs.

Did you know FAMU had a hospital?
