The first two days of school are officially in the books! 🎉💙

Before we start thinking about everything that needs to happen next week, let's take a moment to celebrate what our children have already done.

Maybe your child walked into a brand-new classroom.

Maybe they met a new teacher.

Maybe they followed a new routine, talked to someone new, asked for help — or simply made it through two very long days.

Those things matter.

Not every success comes home with a grade attached to it.

Sometimes progress looks like courage, flexibility, communication, independence — or simply trying again tomorrow.

So this weekend, instead of asking a hundred questions about school, try just one:

“What was one good thing about your week?”

Then listen. 💙

Here's to the first little wins of the 2026–27 school year — and many more to come.

One week at a time. One next step at a time.

08/13/2026

And just like that… a new school year begins. 💙🎒

To every student walking through those school doors today — I hope you feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated for exactly who you are.

To the teachers, therapists, paraprofessionals, administrators, and support staff — thank you for the work you do to help our children learn and grow.

And to the parents watching them walk away this morning…

I know today can bring a little bit of everything — excitement, pride, hope, and maybe some worry too.

Give today permission to simply be Day 1.

There will be time to ask questions, communicate with the school, address concerns, and advocate when needed.

For today, let's celebrate the fresh start. 💙

Happy First Day of School!

Here’s to a year of progress, connection, growth and children being seen for who they are.

The night before school still brings back so many memories... 💙

Tomorrow, families across Miami-Dade will be getting ready to send their children back to school.

And tonight, I know there are parents checking backpacks, laying out clothes, making sure everything is ready—and quietly wondering:

Will my child be okay?
Will the teacher understand them?
Will their accommodations actually be followed?
Will this year be different?

I remember those feelings.

Long before I became a special education advocate, I was a mom trying to understand a system I knew very little about and trying to make sure my child had what she needed to succeed.

Looking at this old school picture of my daughter brings so much of that back.

So tonight, if you're feeling excited and a little nervous, you don't have to figure out the entire school year tonight.

Tomorrow is simply Day 1.

One day at a time.
One question at a time.
One next step at a time. 💙

To all the parents getting ready tonight, I'm thinking of you.

School starts in TWO DAYS! ⏰🎒

Before the first bell rings, there's one simple thing you can do to help your child's teacher get to know them:

Send a short introduction email.

Not a long history.
Not the entire IEP.
Not a list of everything that has gone wrong before.

Just a friendly introduction that shares:

💙 What your child does well
💙 Something that may be challenging
💙 A strategy that helps
💙 A reminder that your child has an IEP or 504 Plan

Starting that relationship with communication and collaboration can make a big difference.

I've created the email for you in this post—just personalize it for your child and send it.

📌 SAVE this post so you can use the template tonight.

And if you know another parent who's getting ready for Thursday, send this to them too.

School starts THURSDAY. 🎒 And if your child has an IEP or 504 Plan, you do NOT need to spend the next few days trying to prepare for everything.

Instead, focus on three simple things:

✔️ Review the parts of the plan that matter most.
✔️ Introduce your child to the teacher—not just their diagnosis.
✔️ Start one place to keep your documents and communication.

One of the things I've learned through years of advocacy—and as a parent myself—is that being prepared doesn't mean knowing everything.

It means knowing what to look for, communicating early, and keeping good records.

Then, when school starts, give everyone a little time to settle in... while still paying attention to whether your child's supports are actually being provided.

💙 Save this post. You may want to come back to it during these first few weeks.

And tomorrow, I'll give you an email you can copy and send to your child's teacher before school starts.

💙 Before the first day of school... remember this.

The start of a new school year can bring excitement, hope... and sometimes a little anxiety.

If your child has an IEP or 504 Plan, remember that you don't have to know everything on day one.

Ask questions.

Communicate with your child's teachers.

Celebrate the small victories.

And don't be afraid to speak up when something doesn't feel right.

The best school teams aren't built by one person; they're built when parents and educators work together with one shared goal: helping your child succeed.

As a special education advocate—and a mom who's been there—I want you to know that your voice matters, your questions matter, and your child matters.

❤️ Wishing every family a wonderful start to the new school year. I'm cheering you on every step of the way.

Save this post as a reminder for those first few weeks of school and share it with another parent who may need a little encouragement.

🐐🐇 Today's petting zoo brought smiles to so many children—but it also reminded me why I love being part of this community.

While families enjoyed the animals, I had the opportunity to meet a dad who had questions about his child's education. We talked about his concerns, the support his child may need, and the next steps available to his family.

Moments like these remind me that advocacy doesn't always happen in a conference room. Sometimes it begins with a simple conversation at a community event.

A heartfelt thank you to Elton and the incredible STARS Miami team for all of the hard work, planning, and care you put into creating these experiences for families throughout the summer. Your dedication creates opportunities not only for children to have fun, but also for parents to find support, ask questions, and build connections.

It has truly been an honor partnering with you this summer.

If you have questions about your child's IEP, 504 Plan, ADHD, autism, or special education services, I'm always here to help.

💙 Sometimes one conversation is all it takes to help a family move forward.
