Suggestions to help retain in today's trades.

Just 20 years ago, when you retired, there was an extremely high chance that you worked with the same company your whole career. Fast-forward to today (MOvember, 2015) and for the first time in history 60% of all Canadian jobs are contract. Meaning that only 40% of working people actually have full time jobs!

Pre 20 years ago when your employer had felt slower times, they would find some sort of work for you within their shop/office to keep you on and to retain their highly skilled workers. However, during the past 20 years once companies start feeling the pinch and slower times they start laying their guys off without even batting an eye. What happened? Well to be honest, I have no idea. I assume it is to save money, but in the long run are the mid-sized companies actually saving money? Because once a worker is laid off, the first thing they do is look for other work. So now this highly skilled and valuable worker will no longer be available when his past employer wants him back. That company now must spend $1000's of dollars to hire a new worker or workers. Especially when you consider the cost of job advertising, paying your recruiter, paying your HR department and getting your trade guys all ticketed up to your requirements etc. In fact, research says $2500 on average per worker in Canada right now. That's even when you do it all in house! And if you decide to outsource your recruiting to an agency its going to cost you at least 4 times that.

And now what we have is a generation of skilled tradesmen who are always on the look-out for a new opportunity, and will jump ship just for an extra dollar an hour. The loyalty to employers in today's tradesmen is gone, and a big reason is because the tradesmen don't feel comfortable in job security.

So if you are a company who requires a fluctuating number of tradesmen due to the projects you are working on and are feeling this [somewhat new] unfortunate trend mentioned above. Then following is a list of suggestions of how you can attract and retain a solid workforce of tradesmen who are always looking for new opportunities. I believe these small notions will go a long way and guys will notice you care and spread the word!

1) Gym Membership - it is always good to promote good health and fitness. perhaps talk to a local gym franchise and talk about a monthly corporate package and share this with your full time and seasonal, contractual workers.

2) Birthday = Holiday - Everyone loves holidays or holiday pay. so why not add 1 extra holiday to the calendar. Introduce everyone now gets to treat their birthday like a holiday. they can take the day off with pay, or work it with extra holiday pay.

3) Thanks Man - In the trades i hear all to often how guys would work their arses off and get no credit or acknowledgement. But if something went wrong then the guys would certainly hear about it. So start spreading the positive message, when you notice someone doing something great, let em know! oh and even when you see them doing something not so great, let them know but please do it one-on-one. another thing that really drives guys nuts.

4) Listen - Some of your workers have been around for years and had worked many other jobs and projects, so it may be a good idea to encourage workers to come forward with any ideas on how to streamline a process, or a new invention and a easier way to do a repetitive task. Maybe offer a neat prize and this will keep your good guys motivated and feel appreciated as well.

5) One-on-One - This is one of my favorites. It kinda brings in number 3 and 4 together here, but have your Superintendent or Foremen set aside 30 minutes once a week with each employee. You can discuss everything and anything on these one-on-ones. You can find out which guys are slacking, how to improve certain things, give praise and give guys advice. If someone is not pulling their weight you can find out if its an issue at home for example and instead of letting them go, maybe a week off so they can deal with their problems would be a better answer. Prepare 10-15 questions and ask each worker every week. and continue to ask the same questions week after week. it will be surprising to see what you learn while building respect.

From my experience with working both in the field and in the office talking to guys, this short list above can really turn the morale around within your workforce, and have them answer the phone again when your looking to manup for yet another project.

Also please remember, if you need any manpower whatsoever feel free to contact me anytime! I have a roster of 300 Canadian Tradesmen who all have worked for me in the past on many contracts. I have very attractive blended rates and I will keep negotiating rates until we have a contract signed if that what it takes.
