🧾Due to new federal data sent out during January
1️⃣The number of students sleeping in cars, parks and on the streets more than doubled in one year’s time, the data shows, and the number of students living in hotels increased by 17%
2️⃣The report also shows student homelessness increased by 10% or more in 16 states and by 20% or more in eight states, while five states saw a reduction of 10% or more.
3️⃣Over a three-year period, the rate of homelessness among English learners increased by 30%, and by 16% among students who have disabilities or are unaccompanied — similar to the overall rate for all homeless students.

Nearly 1 in 5 community college students in the U.S. experienced homelessness in the past year.
60% of community college have experienced housing insecurity
19% lived with others beyond the expected capacity of the housing
8% left their household because they felt unsafe.

This is a real problem in United States and it’s not getting enough attention as it should.
We need to spread awareness and fix this.

When students turn 18, they lose many social supports, like free school lunch, and may then struggle to provide for themselves.

Federal educational aid is intended to cover tuition, not housing, food, and transportation, all necessary expenses for full-time students.

And then there’s the changing student population. More Americans are attending college, including those with lower incomes and those who are older and looking to switch careers (more than a third of the nation’s population has completed four years of college or more). More than one in five undergraduate students are parents.

Community college students, who are often commuters and don’t have the option of on-campus dormitories, are particularly affected by rising housing costs, especially in urban areas. The existing school aid and financing system, geared toward 18-year-old high school graduates with middle-class backgrounds and family support, seems increasingly antiquated and ineffective in light of these shifts.
