*A. For all Muslims:*
1. *Day Musa AS was saved*: The Prophet ﷺ found Jews in Madinah fasting on Ashura. He asked why, they said: “This is the day Allah saved Musa and Bani Israel from Pharaoh, so Musa fasted in gratitude.” The Prophet ﷺ said: _“We have more right to Musa than you,”_ and fasted that day. [Sahih Bukhari 2004]
*Sunnah*: Fast on 10th Muharram, and add 9th or 11th to be different from the Jews.
*Reward*: _“Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will expiate the sins of the previous year.”_ [Sahih Muslim 1162]
2. *Other Prophetic events*: Scholars mention many events happened on Ashura — Nuh AS’s Ark landed on Mount Judi, Yunus AS was freed from the whale, Ibrahim AS was saved from fire. These show it’s historically a day of _deliverance and mercy_.
*B. For Shia Muslims especially:*
3. *Martyrdom of Imam Hussain AS at Karbala — 61 AH / 680 CE*: The grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, along with his family and companions, was killed on 10th Muharram.
*Why it matters*: It represents the stand against injustice, tyranny, and sacrificing everything for truth. The tragedy of Karbala is mourned deeply. Muharram becomes a month of grief, reflection, and _majalis_ to remember Hussain AS’s principles.

*3. The Hijrah Connection*
Though the Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah happened in Rabi’ al-Awwal, Caliph Umar RA chose Muharram as the _first month_ of the Islamic calendar.
*Why*: Muharram was when the intention and planning for Hijrah was finalized after the Pledge of Aqabah. So the Hijri calendar starts with the month that marks the _new beginning_ of the Muslim ummah.
*Meaning for us*: Muharram = New Islamic Year. Time to make hijrah from bad habits to good ones. Fresh start with Allah.

*4. What Should Muslims Do in Muharram?*
*Sunnah acts:*
1. *Fasting*: Especially 9th & 10th, or 10th & 11th. Even fasting the whole month is encouraged. The Prophet ﷺ said: _“The best fasting after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Muharram.”_ [Sahih Muslim 1163]
2. *Increase good deeds*: Charity, dhikr, Quran, seeking forgiveness. Rewards are multiplied.
3. *Avoid sin & fighting*: Since it’s a sacred month, extra caution with tongue, actions, and conflicts.
4. *Reflection*: On sacrifice, justice, and standing for truth — lessons from Musa AS and Hussain AS.
*What’s not from Sunnah*: Extreme mourning rituals like self-flagellation, or treating it as a month of bad luck where weddings can’t happen. Islam doesn’t have “unlucky” months. Grief is natural, but innovation in worship isn’t.
